HIBERNIAN DEBATING CLUB

The Hibernian Gocial and Debating Club recently held a Shakespearean reading under the direction of Mr J. B. Flynn, who is to be complimented upon its success. The play was ‘Olhello.’ The vice-president (Mr J. E. RvaiD occupied the chair. Tho followjug members took part in the reading:—Othello, J. B Flynn; Togo, A. J. Dowling; Duke of Venice, B. Pledger; Brabanlio, F. G. Brown; Roderigo, R. A. King; Cassio, P. Wilson; Moxiana, C. C. Corston; Loclovico, G. O’Connell; Desdemona, R. Thompson; Amelia, 1. G. Rogers. At another gathering an interesting debate was held. The club president (Mr A. Gillick) presided, and thanked the Rev, Fathers Hanarhan and M’Devitt for their attendance. _ The subject was: ‘That the Moral Life of To-day is on a Higher Plane Than That of the Victorian Era.’ Tho affirmative was taken by Messrs R. Thninpson (lender), J. 15. Ryan, and M. Hayes, and the negative by Messrs A. J. Dowling (leader), W. Lowe, and J. J; Kennedv. Air F. Moloney acted as judge. The debate was the best yet held this year, and each speaker argued his case well. On a vote of the audience tho negative side was declared to have won, and this was also the decision of the judge, who awarded 270 points against 260. Mr Moloney imparted some useful information to the speakers, and complimented the club on the high standard reached, making special mention of tho promise of some fine speakers from the young members. Hie club recently held a billiard match in the chib rooms. Octagon, with the North-east Valley Catholic Men’s Club. Scores (Hibernian names first) :—N. Walsh 100 v. If. L. Gnllien 45; F. Rahrens 100 v <1 Bevis 55; F. Brown 50 v. G. W. Morrow 100; G. Corston 100 v J. Bland 55; R. Fraser 100 v. P. J. Byrne 77 ; J. J. Marlow, jun., 100 v. G. Wold) 47. The Hibernian Club proved the winners by 550 to 577. Supper was served in the social room.

< Last evening an instructive lecture on ‘Evolution ami Catholicism’ was given by tho Rev. Father Tylee (Acini.), who in the course of his remark's imparted much valuable information.
