SAVED BY FISHING LINE

MAN SWEPT OFF HOCKS A fishing line, slightly thicker than au ordinary piece of twine, was mainly instrumental in saving the life ,of Thomas Joseph Roach, aged twenty years, of Leichhardt, Sydney, when he was washed from the rocks while fishing at Long Bay. Roach was in the 'water for an hour and twenty minutes, and clung during tho greater part of the time to a plank which companions on shore had thrown to him, and. to which the fishing line was attached. Had the line broken Roach would have been swept out to sea. The fishing line, which was a twentycord line less thaii an eighth of an inch in thickness, was strong enough to prevent Roach drifting out to sea, but was not sufficiently strong to permit of his being drawn in to the shore. He discarded his heavy boots and most of his clothes. After he had been in the water for an hour and twenty' minutes a launch manned by fishermen left the shore. When the launch reached Roach he was still clinging to the plank, but he was suffering greatly from tho cold, and was almost completely exhausted. When taken into the boat he was so weak that he - could scarcely stand.
