WEST HARBOUR AFFAIRS

SECOND COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last evening, when the following were present:—Mr H. E- Holler (mayor), Crs Venn, Cameron, Wilson, Forgie, Hayward. Asher, Rodger. Kay, and Smith. CORRESPONDENCE. T’h District Traffic Manager of Railways (Mr B. R. Sword) asked the council for advice in regard to the suggested alteration of running the 10.16 p.m. train leaving Dunedin to 10.30 p.m. This alteration was suggested in view of representations which had been made to the department. The Railway Committee recommended that the suggested alteration be approved on condition that the new arrangement did not intor fere with the running of the 11.15 p.m. train. This action was approved. Mr Sword also informed the council that the question of the more frequent running of the 11.17 pm. DunedinPort Chalmers train was still under consideration, and the decision arrived at would be announced later. The Hon. O. W. Forbes, on behalf of the Minister of Railways, advised that arrangements were being made for the provision of a temporary shelter at Maia station. —The towii clerk was instructed to write thanking the Minister. ■

The Borough Engineer (.Mr F. Williams) reported that it had been cided to expend the sum of £3,047 6s on the maintenance of the DunedinPorb Chalmers road for the year ending March 31, 1930, at Urn following places:—Ravensbourno Ward, £160; Rothesay Ward, £367; St. Leonards Ward, £l4B 16s; Sawyers Bay road (including half boundary road), £l,Oll 10s; Waikouaiti County Council (including half boundary road £660, slips £100). The apportionment'would be as follows; —Main Highways Board, £2.031 10s 8d; Dunedin City Council, £507 17s Sd; West Harbour Council, £3BO 18s 3d; and Port Chalmers Borough, £126 1.9 s or!.—Received.

WORKS COMMITTEE S REPORT. CV F. W. Venn (chairman of the Works Committee) reported that the committee bad inspected the streets and footpaths in Ravensbourne and Rothesay Wards. This inspection, being the first ■by the new committee, it was greatly indebted to the mayor for accompanying members Generally speaking/they found this part of the borough in fair order The following works were recommended to be earned out:—All footpaths to be lop dressed with toppings, the screenings used in the past being considered unsuitable. The footpath in Bay View terrace to bo tarred and sanded, and where necessary new kerbing to be used. The lower cud of this street, and also Athol place where it joined Royal terrace, would require a fair amount of rnetai which should be. suitably blinded. The committee also inspected St. Leonards and Sawyers Bay Wards It recommended that Jetty street be metalled, suitable metal being 'procurable ; u the locality on Mr Mainlands’s property (Mr Mainlands bad kindly given them permission to use same) ; also footpaths in St. Leonards Ward be top dressed with toppings.—The report was approved. GENERAL.

The tender of the Love Construction Company was accepted for the construction of culverts and mud tanks on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers highway on condition 'that it was approved by the engineer. , • Accounts amounting to £156 16s lid were passed for payment, leaving a debit balance of £l2O 4s 2d.
