ORANG-OUTANG’S SWAN SONG
THE DEATH OF “ PETER GOLIATH” BUDAPEST, May. 21. Peter Goliath, the'orang-outang who was bought last year, with liis mate and little one, for the sum of T2„(3OU pengo, has died at the Zoo. When the Goliath family wore brought to Budapest no effort .was spared to make them tool at . home, 'they were installed in two large cages lined with glass and filled with damp air of a temperature of 25dcg C.above zero. Brandies were fixed across;the cages, and small birds were introduced into the cages to give _ the orangoutangs the illusion of being back in their Sumatra jungle. But in spite of these precautions and a studied diet of. milk, eggs, figs, oranges, and bananas, the female and the baby succumbed within _ a few months. After the death of his mate, Peter Goliath developed a propensity which aroused the astonishment, and interest of the experts; every evening after eating his supper he would sing a melancholy song, and a few days ago. after his usual nocturne,’ hj went to sleep and never awakened again.
