RADIO ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING The sixth annual meeting of the Otago Radio Association was held last evening, Mr J. T. Cooper (vice-presi-dent) being in the chair, in the absence of tho president. The annual report stated that during the year the affairs of the association were" singularly' uneventful, nothing of anv importance whatsoever having to bo" dealt with. Tho weekly transmissions continued to be looked forward to by listeners not only' in Dunedin, but iu various parts of the dominion and iu Australia. Through the courtesy of Messrs Home Recreations, Ltd.; Rattray street, the Dunedin association had been aide throughout the year In present to listeners programmes which had met with an excellent reception, ft was* felt that the correct transmission of good icoords was far to bo preferred to the transmission of the average artist available for broadcast work, this view being very largely hold by listeners, to judge from the reports received. On tlwLdate of the last transmission for the past financial year. Station 4ZB was inspected by the Chief Telegraph Engineer for New Zealand (Mr Gibbs), who was accompanied by Mr F. J. O’Grady (district radio inspector). Mr Gibbs expressed ins satisfaction with the station, and stated that when in Wellington it was one of the stations he most enjoyed tuning in on. The association was indebted again to Mr Robert Bruce for the construction and installation on the transmitting set of a transformer for tiie purpose of lighting the valve filaments by moans of alternating current. This innovation bad been very successful, and was the method of filament lighting at present regularly in use, except for odd occasions when for the benefit of the batteries a transmission was made on them. 'During the year the association suffered two irreparable josses. Tim original president and one of the promoters of the association (Mr Robert C. Jones) was removed from tho membership roll by death. The association had also to record the death of another of the original .members. Mr Robert Hay. Those two gentlemen had ITom the inception of the association taken a real and live interest in its welfare, and they' would be sadly missed. Yeoman service had been readerocl to fbo association by flic indefatigable operator and secretary, Mr if). G. Mitchell, and were -it not for his continual devotion to the affairs ol the association it was thought that matters would bear a very diflcrent complexion. Meek by week be bad been at the transmitter cheerfully carrying out each transmission without complaint. It was ieit. however, that it was time some method was evolved whereby' two separate operators and announcers could be available, thus removing the tremendous tic widely a weekly attendance at the station meant. ft was also telt that among the members of the association there inimt surely' lie one or two who would be prepared to devote a little time to (lie practical work in conjunction with the present crew. During the year llie opportunity was taken of extending thanks hi the'station director of -IYA nn behalf of the listeners for the excellent service given by that station during the iraim-Tasman flight. A further letter of thanks might well come in recognition of the lurthor excellent service rendered by that station on the occasion of the recent floods. In moving flic adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman said that good reports from all parts of New Zealand and from the Chatham Islands had been received by the association. Those reports spoke well for tho association’s transmitting with a sinail-poworcd plant. The bal-ance-sheet showed a very satisfactory credit balance ol C-‘> Is Sd,
