LINCOLN'S DUEL
SWORDS CHOSEN An amazing account of how Abraham Lincoln fought a duel with swords and cracked funny stories on the way to the duelling ground is disclosed from New York. The incident is described in a statement made just before her death by Airs Alary Carr Shields, widow of General James Shields, Lincoln’s opponent in the duel. •=*.
The trouble. .'ho reveals, arose through a letter Lincoln wrote ridiculing Shield's attitude over a political matter. This letter eventually iound its wav into the Press. It was decided that the duel was to he fought over a plank of wood 1011 When they came to iaco each other with drawn swords Lincoln and ids antagonist decided that they must look a little foolish to other eyes. So did their seconds, who retired to talk matters over. When the seconds returned they had resolved that the duel should not go on. Air Lincoln subsequently agreed to When Lincoln 0 became . President he made Air Shields a brigadier-general.
