PHENOMENAL GOLF

MISS KAY RETAINS LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP FIHAI AT BALMACEWEH A fitting climax to a highly successful tournament was staged at the Halniacewen Links tin’s morning, when some phenomenal golf was witnessed in the final of the ladies’ open championship of Otago, in which Miss 0. -Kay, the brilliant St. Clair player, retained her title against the Otago Chib s representative, Mrs H. Doclgshun, a former champion and cx-New Zealand titleholder, the match finishing at the fourteenth green in Miss Kay s favour, 6 and 4. ' . Conditions this morning were good, although the weather was a trine on the warm side. The fairways were perfect despite the dew in the early morning, and the greens were running well, as could be seen by the putts that were holed.

Mrs Dodgshun and Miss Kay met recently in the final of the Canterbury ladies’ ‘championship, the latter emerging victorious. Last year, in the Otago final, Miss Kay won on the nineteenth green. Both players have taken part in two strenuous tournaments, and Miss Kay being a younger and stronger player the strain has told less upon her than on hor opponent. From start to finish to-day Miss Kay played superb golf in every department of the game, her form being so magnificent that it will ho surprising indeed if she fails to be a formidable, opponent in the final of the New Zealand ladies’ championship this year. The St. Clair player s driving and putting alike were excellent. ler golf being almost IniiltIcss. Perhaps she had the little bit of luck that was going, which compensated for the very Icw .slips she may have made.

Miss Kay’s outward halt vend ns follows:—'!, 3,3, 3,4, 4,4, 5, 4-3-1. Against this remarkable golf Mrs Dodgslnm was not in form, and did not play her usual, easy game. The ox-champion failed mostly with her drive, her putting being C|iiito good. The success of the tournament must, in a large measure, be ascribed to the excellent work that has been carried out by Miss E. M. Hart, secretary of the Otago Ladies' Golf Club, whoso arrangements and organisation have left nothing to bo desired.
