SOUTH ISLAND FINALS TO-DAY EXCELLENT GAMES Beautiful weather ruled for the South Island lawn tennis championships at the Anderson’s Bay courts this morning, and some excellent games were witnessed. All the games, witli the exception of the combined events, are well on their way to being concluded. In the semi-final of the ladies doubles championship Airs Scott mid Aliss Gibson, the Timaru players, combined splendidly, and defeated Alisses Partridge and Wake, 6-4, 0-3. Aliss Gibson ke,-vt an excellent length throughout, giving Aliss Partridge little chance at the net. Airs Scott excelled at smashing down the centre line. The bulk of the play was taken by . Aliss Wake, who played a very consistent game. The final of the men’s handicap singles between Temple and AlTvinnon, of Oaniarn, resulted in a win for the latter alter a very creditable exhibition. His steadiness was largely accountable for his victory, and he played well at the net and from the backline. Temple was a little rash, and hit too hard. There was a ding-dong struggle between Airs Scott, of Timaru, and Miss Wake, of Christchurch, for the ladies' singles championship. The game was mostlv a backlino one, and both ladies showed great skill In their placing. Airs Scott anticipated her opponent's strokes splendidly. Rallies were plentiful and exciting, and Tfotli players received well-deserved applause.
