THE EVENTS DESCRIBED

[Special to the * Star.’] The opening event, the Kildare Hurdle Handicap, provided mi interesting contest. Troilus and Lancer accounted for the bulk of the invest.nuents, the former winding _up favourite by twenty tickets. Troilus, •jumping well, had charge from Amorist, Lancer, and Rangatalu going to the far turn, where Amorist hit heavily and lost his position. Rangatahi headed Troilus rounding the home turn and led to the straight entrance from Lancer, Radiate, and ■ Troilus. The three first-named were in close order over the last fence, but in the run home Radiate finished on the best to heat Lancer by half a length, with Rangatnhi a ’short length away next. Troilus was a poor fourth, with ' Amorist, whose rider lost an iron, next. The winner had only been in work six weeks prior to the race, but tamo .to hand quickly. Ho made one faulty jump, but outpaced the opposition over the final stages. Lancer lost bis chance by bad jumping. He blundered at the last obstacle,' but then finished on gamely, Troilus gave the best display of the field, but stopped badly ''three furlongs from home. * * # * Pink Coat was made a hot favourite for the Champagne Stakes ■ and he duly won, but only by the narrowest of ■ margins. The field got away well, and g.s the course proper was reached Pink ■ Coat had a slight advantage from First Money, My Own, au,d Disorder, First Money drew up to Pink Coat commencing the run home and this pair left the field anti engaged in an exciting finish. First Money had his head in front fiOyds from the post, but the favourite, with a determined final effort, got in ■ the deciding stride to gain the honours by half a head. Disorder did the best of the remainder and gained third money, two lengths away, and then there was a gap to Blue Metal and My Own, with Duellona last. , . Pink Coat had a narrow escape, hut it appeared as if bis rider was too easy with him and should have taken more advantage of his pace after entering the home run instead of allowing First Money to get to him. The latter Was troubled by the journey and should do better bn the , second day. Disorder ran a good race, but My Own was disappointing and whs palpably not herself. * * * * In a well-distributed pool in the Autumn Plate, The Viscount carried a few more tickets than were entrusted to . Phastar, tut although he executed a good race’he was beaten into third pkeb. Witisome Boy was the first to break the line, but after a furlong had been covered Thurso, who drew the inside berth, took charge from Paper Boy and The Viscount, followed by Winl.some Boy. Thurso was the first to enter the straight with Paper Boy, Tlie Viscount, Stnrslicoter, and Hurl.v Jltyrly .IjjdrsQ sfcjll Mid his ,qd-

van tags to within a few stride’s from he post, but Starshooter, on the outside, wore him down and beat him by a neck. The Viscount was half a length away, a head in front of Hurly Burly, with Wrigley and Evening close up, and Phastar at the head of the remainderThurso endeavoured to win from end to end, and only failed in the last stride. Starshooter was never far from the leaders, and completed Ins task in a determined manner. The Viscount had every chance, mid will soon get on the winning list, Hurly Burly gave promise at the distance, hut failed to finish on under punishment. Wrigley was the last to leave the mark, and then finished in fifth place after going round the whole hold.

First Aioney. .'Juniper, and Dnellona were withdrawn from the Russley Plate, for which Francoliu was installed a good favourite. The issue was never in doubt ns .she followed Leader into the straight and had him beaten well down the running, winning in an easy maimer by three lengths. Leader wins two lengths in front of Stately, who was followed hy Straight Course, Leading Hoy, Belcaire, Desert Song, Aliss Nightraid, and Arrowshield. ,Tho winner had an easy task, and f?ith an advantage of much more racing experience than the majority of the contestants she outclassed the field. Leader made an auspicious debut in spite of showing greenness. In the run homo Stately again failed to follow up her track form, but did the best of the remainder.

Twelve of flic acceptors paraded for the Great Easter Handicap, Pink Note and Amor being the only defections. Notwithstanding a change of riders for Silver Paper, he was sent out a much better favourite than Cimabue, who was well clear of Royal Saxon ami Great Star. A splendid start was effected and when the field settled down Meadow Lark took charge, but was soon supplanted by Great Star, who led round the far tiuni from .Royal Saxon. Meadow Lark, and Cimabue, Silver Paper dropping back to last at this stage. There was little change to the home turn and Great Star was first into the straight from Royal Saxon, Meadow Lark, Cimabue, Gay Sonnet, and Silver Paper. In the ran home Great Star was challenged by Cimabue inside the distance, and although appearing to be able to hold his place, lie weakened In the last 100yds and Cimabue beat him comfortably by a length.. Meadow Lark was throe lengths away, two lengths in front of Silver Paper, who made a great run from the back. Seatown was next, and then came at intervals Magna Charta, Paperchase, Rin Tin Tin, Gay Sonnet, and Rameses, with Booster and Royal Saxon together last. Cimabue was responsible for a solid effort, and was evidently nob troubled by the distance. Great Star created a good impression, and only submitted to defeat in the last half furlong. Meadow Lark showed his usual brilliancy early. He was then steadied, but failed to go on with the struggle. Silver Paper was the unlucky contestant, and but for being interfered with would have participated in the finish. An inquiry was held into the incident which caused his being sent back, but it was decided that the evidence adduced from the riders concerned (Reale, Voitre, and A. E. Ellis) did not disclose who was to blame.

The Gimcrack Handicap was another uninteresting race for the majority of investors. Berneva and Caterpillar were the smartest to begin, and the latter entered the course proper with a clear advantage from Berneva, Sea Raid, Impertinence, and Star Stranger fl. Caterpillar strode away from the field when headed for the post, and, although appearing to be tiring at the finish, she had an advantage of three lengths from Impertinence at the post with Sea Raid another two lengths aw'ay. Star Stranger 11, was next, followed by Night Effort, Noteworthy, ami Berneva.

Caterpillar had the opposition in trouble over the last three furlongs. The pace she set was the means of the field being well strung out along the straight. The favourite, Berneva, had every chance, but closed up in a surprising manner at the distance.

The withdrawals of Pink Note, Scalown, avid Chide left only four starters for the Sockburn Handicap. Prickles acted as pacemaker from the start, and led into the straight from Battle Colours, Amor, and Thorndale. Amor was done with when turned for home, and Battle Colours tackled Prickles, in a long-sustained finish Prickles stuck gamely to her task, but Battle Colours wore tier down to gain th© verdict by a head margin. Thorndale was five lengths away, with Amor tailed off.

The winner was always going well, and finished on better than in previous efforts. Prickles ran her best race this season, and fought out every inch of a hard tussle. Thorndale failed to run on, while Amor gave a poor display.

Magna Charta, Sudden_ Storm, and Paper Boy were the defections from the concluding event, the Courteiay Handicap, and in a good pool Buoyant was a much better favourite than Tripaway, Silver Coot, and Arrowmir, and 'the quartet took a prominent part in the decision of the contest. Silver Coot took charge after a furlong had been traversed, and led into the straight from Buoyant, Nincompoop, Arrowmir, and Tripaway. Silver Coot was not seriously troubled in the run home to win by two lengths from Tripaway, who finished on better than Arrowmir to beat him by half a length for second honours. Buoyant was close up next, and then followed Nincompoop, Quarterdeck, Moratorium, Aberfekly, and Gold Brick, with Decoy Bird last.
