HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Tlic monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools Hoard was held yesterday afternoon, there being present the chairman (Professor Cl. .I*l. Thompson). Mrs Park, Dr Marshall Macdonald. Messrs W. II- Hrngii, J. M. Callaway, and J. J. Mallard. The appointment of Mr Alexander Salmond to a grade J) position on the .staff of the Hoys’ High School was confirmed. Accounts amounting to £2,075 12s 7d were passed lor payment. PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. The Rector of the Hoys' High School reported that the total number of boys now on tbc school roll was 735, including 271 seniors, 4-.5D juniors, and twenty-«ive paying pupils. The corresponding total for last year was 720. The names of live boys of the school appeared, in the supplementary list of passes lor the University entrance examination (three for matriculation only, two for solicitors’ general and medical preliminary also), making the total number of passes seventy-nine. Tbc candidates thus passed were boys who had just tailed to get the requisite percentage in one subject, but had done well in the examination as a whole or in a group of cognate subjects. The council of the New Zealand Universitv at its recent meeting gave power to a committee to deal with such eases on the merits, and to pass those who were deemed worthy of admission to a University course. This decision will operate regularly in subsequent years, and in my judgment a real improvement. All (he boys who were'so passed Irom tbo school had obtained percentages well above Hie average. ,Mi>s K ing (principal or the Girls’ School) reported the roll now stood at -157. of which 161. were seniors, 2U2 juniors, and four paying pupils. The reports wore adopted.
