‘TOMMY ATKINS ’
COMMENCING AT THE EMPIRE TO-MORROW Latterly, a great change for the better has been noticeable in British productions, and it has been obvious that the producers, after having studied American methods, have set themselves out to improve on them, A film which fully demonstrates this point is a British international' picture, ‘Tommy Atkins,’ which will commence screening at the Empire Theatre to-morrow. The production gives a picturisation of military activities. In the, role of Tommy Atkins, Walter Butler gives a Convincing portrayal, while Lilian HallDavis is the heroine of the story. Henry Victor and Shayle Gardner complete the list of principals. At the commencement of the story a. small force of British soldiers in the Sudan is cut to pieces by natives, the only survivors being the six-year-old son of the C.O. and his servant Ala son, who takes tho hoy back to England. The boy’s grandfather, the Earl of Petherton, dies, and the title is assumed by a younger son in the belief that his brother and nephew have died. When he learns the truth from Mason lie decides to suppress the fact, and Harold, the real heir, is brought up with Ids cousin Victor and his uncle’s ward, Ruth. Victor becomes an officer in the Army, while Harold enters the church. Both fall in love with Butli, and she becomes engaged to Victor. Harold resigns his living and enters the Army, and just after he has loft Victor hears of his father’s deception and that he is not the heir to the title. Victor goes abroad with his regiment and the two cousins meet again. In a frontier war Victor is fatally wounded, hut just before he dies is able to tell the truth to Harold, who eventually returns to England to resume his title and find consolation in the love of Butli, ‘Bed Hot Speed,’ Reginald Denny's latest comedy, will he the other picture, and the latest Empire News film will also be shown.
