RELIEF MEASURES
CITY COUNCIL'S SYMPATHY APPRECIATION EXPRESSED FOR HELP GIVEN ' At last evening's meeting ot the City Council tbo deputy-mayor (Cr. J. 8. Douglas) said he would like to take the opportunity of expressing the_ council’s deep sympathy with those citizens who had suffered owing to (he flood. He was very pleased to say that they had managed to get a relief organisation working. There was no doubt that there was a great deal of distress in various parts of the city, and he would like to express appreciation to the Salvation Army, the (iconised victuallers, and hoarding-house keepers ol tlie citv, to the crew of H.M.S. Dunedin. to the police, and to the city's social workers who Vtere working to an early hour that morning. Cr Douglas went on to outline what had been done at Hie relief meetings which had been held during the day in the Council Chamber. It was very gratifying to see that several citizens had come along and assisted in the matter of linanco. He moved that the council place on record an expression of its deep sympathy with those citizens affected by the Hood. In seconding Hie motion, Cr Black complimented the deputy-mayor on fh« work that had been done so early. It was the work that was done at the lirst that counted must. Cr Mitchell said he would like to urge that funds were urgently required, and hoped that councillors would all do their little hit in assisting in the providing of-relief. Cr Begg, as one of those who was working in the northern Hood area, referred to the great benefit derived by workers from the light provided by the searchlights of 11 ..M >. Dunedin. Me, with many oilier workers, was badly tip against it when the street lights went out. but with Hie glare provided by the searchlights it was possible to move about safely, and the turning on of the searchlights was greatly appreciated by all am! sundry, and their heartfelt ihanks immediately wont out to the sailor hoys, who, ouco again, protect themselves handy men. Cr Shacklock said he would like it 10 he understood that the failure of the lights referred to by Cr Begg was i ot due to a breakdown at Maipori, hut lo some local cause. The motion was carried.
