A WOMAN DROWNED. Frances Caroline Lurasden, a single woman,-of Feilding, aged forty-one, was drowned in a bathing pool in the Waingongoro River, Onawe, seven iniles from Hawera, about 5.30 last night. Attempts were made by a non-swimmer to rescue the woman, who was fully clothed, by throwing to her a log of wood, which she grasped for some minutes. The non-swimmer ran for assistance to the beach, a quarter of a mile away, and ten others went to the spot, but found the woman drowned.—Press Association. A SAD CASE. At the inquest on Gladys Ethel Evans, twenty-seven, who was run over by a train at a level crossing near Hawera on Tuesday, the coroner found that the deceased committed suicide by throwing herself in front of a tram while in a state of deep mental depression. It was stated in evidence that before the train was due deceased had been seen in the vicinity of the crossing. When the train approached, she walked along the cattle stop, taking no notice of the whistle, and then appeared to lean over and fold her arms over the rails. Four days previously she had. been discharged from a maternity hospital, where her child was born dead, ’ causing her acute distress. She left a letter couched in endearing terms to her husband, indicating her intentions.—Press Anociation.
