The Fuller-Hayward Theatres, Ltd., applied for permission to screen pictures at the Strand, .Everybody’s, and King Edward Theatres on Good Friday The programmes would 'he submitted for the council’s approval, and an assurance Mas given that no j/ictures not appropriate to the day would be screened. No member of the stall would bo asked to work against Jus will. “That the request be acceded to on the usual terms” was moved by Cr W A. Scott. “I. can see no reason why the council should make any exception to any day in the year. All days should be kept holy.” The usual terms, be explained, specified that no charge for admission bo made, but a collection M r as permissible, and the screenings could not take place till the evening services at the churches had concluded. Cr J. W. Munro, M.P., seconded the notion. Cr H. C. Campbell pointed out that several letters had been received last year from various religious bodies objecting to pictures being screened on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Cr J. J. Clark; The council refused the application last year. Cr D. Larnach said similar applications had been refused by the council in the past. “ What argument is that?” asked Cr Scott. “If Me have been foolish for so many years, why should we continue to be foolish?” Cr It. S. Black said the past decisions had been made to protect the people mTio objected to pictures being screened on such days. He was opposed to the motion. The motion was defeated, only Crs Scott and Munro voting for it.
