ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
TWO YOUNG MEN DROWNED. Two bathing fatalities occurred in the Bailor district yesterday. Vivian ('lark, a senior apprentice on the s.s. Trcwiddcn, which arrived from Wellington at 1 p.m., wont lor a bathe in the’floating basin with Potter, a fellowapprentice. Potter swam out to u buov, and was returning to the shore when he passed Clark. Booking round when he was near the shore ho saw Clark disappearing, and swam over towards him, but saw nothing further oi him. The. body was recovered twenty minutes later ‘by officers of the s.s. Kaimanawa, who arrived on the scene with a rope. The deceased was eighteen wars ol ago, and a native, ot Port Talbot, South Wales, where his parents reside. The other fatality occurred at Karamea, the victim being Charles Hodgson, twenty years of age, driver tor George Burrows, the Royal Mail motor contractor for the WestpoiT-Karamca service. Hodgson and Ron Simpson were bathing in a lagoon at Quinlan’s bridge, and Hodgson got out ot his depth and was drowned. Simpson also had a narrow escape, a roadman named Senior bringing him out, in an exhausted state. . An inquest was hold last night by tiic coroner (Mr Fox) touching the death of Clark, when a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. LITTLE CHILD KILLED. A two-year-old child, Dawn Douglas, daughtcr”of Mr and Mrs Stanley Douglas, of To Kopium (Auckland), was killed on the Kankapakapa. road, eight miles from Helensvillo, yesterday. The family were travelling by car while on holiday when the accident happened. The wheels were caught in a rut, and became locked, causing the car to capsize. , In an effort to save her child Mrs Douglas threw the infant out of the window, but the car turned over on it, causing injuries which were instantly fatal. The other occupants of the car were uninjured. Air and Airs Douglas have a drapery business in Te Kopnni. OLD MAN’S DEATH. Clarence Shannon, aged seventy, who resided at North Brighton, died in the Christchurch Hospital. Ho was found in his homo with his throat cut. SUDDEN DEATH. An elderly man named Robert Alexander, married, residing at Hamilton, dropped dead yesterday while visiting the farm of Air Stokes, Hautapu. Ho lied suffered from heart disease, and an inquest will not be necessary. The deceased was a senior stock inspector until three years ago, when he retired. Since then he had been doing veterinary work.
