LAWN TENNIS
j, ' — HEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS SECOND DAY’S PLAY [Peb United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, December ‘29. After two days lost through rain, which was heaviest late on Friday afternoon and early in the, evening, the New Zealand lawn tennis championships were resumed shortly after 10.30 on Saturday morning, in oppressive heat and under- cloudy skies, ihe couits, although w'ell treated with heavy rollers and sawdusted on tho. baselines, presented a greasy surface. Many players wore shoe nets and some spiked loot>mar. Such conditions favoured adepts at playing the sidelines and drop- shots at the net, anything so placed as to call for a quick change of position being difficult to recover. 'The conditions underfoot improved as the day wore on, and the menace of thunder showeis failed to materialise. There was a wealth of hue tennis, particularly among the lady contestants’ matcliek. The held in tho. men . * singles hasi been reduced to sixteen, without any sensational surprises, and as the best players are now llloetl,l ° there should be some rare tennis on tho succeeding days. , . . The contestants in the ladies suites now number eight. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane is the sole remaining Auckland representative. Canterbury lost Miss 'Wake, who was de eated in a splendidly-contested match by Mims Myers. Miss Speirs (Canteroury), the title-holder, made many errors in the first set against Mrs bchrott, but settled down iu the second, and gave an attractive exhibition at driving, the number of clean placements to her credit being most impressive and justly deserving the applause which greeted 1 ‘forty-live games to decide the issue in the doubles between Lampe (Wanganui) and Rhodes-AAillmms (Wellington') and Chalmers and Ko > inson (Auckland). Williams throughout displayed extremely fine stroke production. . , . The play of the tcu-year-old midget, Douglas Howe, of Wellington, in his match in the boys’ singles against W. Fisher (Auckland), excited the intere*t unci admiration of more than hair the morning crowd. The determination of the tiny Wellingtoman, , a little higher than the net and wedding a ]3oz racket with both hands, delighted the spectators. A member of a family of lawn .tennis 'enthusiasts, bo has handled a racket since he was five years old. - . , Sparkling tennis was provided in the defeat bv Miss Marjorie Macfarlane ol Miss Howe (Wellington).' The Aucklander throughout hit cleaner and with more power, her high-speed backhand placings being consistently brilliant. Griffiths’s knowledge of the game and his wonderful fighting qualities vere shown iu his match with Malfroy. ihe AVellington player kept the lead tor the first two sets, going to the net chiefly on good length drives down the ccntie of the court, and volleying decisively from the back of tho court. He played finely-controlled tennis, occasionally bringing off brilliant passing shots when Griffiths ventured to the net. In the third set Griffiths commenced a lobbing campaign So, accurately were these shots played and so quick was he to tallow up any advantage offered that he was rewarded with the set. Mai troy came away again in the fourth, but Griffiths fought to tho hist point. Sturt played brilliantly against Morrison, hitting the lines with well-placed forehand and backhand drives. What resolved itself into one of the best and most closely-fought matches up to the present was played between Miss Myers (Wanganui) and Miss Wake (Christchurch),' the former gaining a well-deserved and notable triumph. The Wanganui player did not have the speed of Miss Wake on-the forehand, but she was tireless in: court covering, making many miraculous recoveries. She also made greater use of the forecourt, and scored many points with well-angled cross-court shots. The Miss Nicholls-Miss Andrew match was a well-played contest, in which there was any amount of hard hitting. Tho AVellington player was a little more reliable at the critical stages, and won in straight sets., Mrs Hobson (Auckland) played good and determined tennis against Miss Tracy (AVellington), forcing the latter to produce her best strokes to win. The Auckland player got within two strokes of the second set, but Miss Tracy saved with a good service. Tn the Ladies’ Doubles Misses Marjorie and Marion Macfarlane just- kept ahead of Mesdames Shroff and ScottAVatson, and won without losing a set. The losers were always liable to get dangerous,, but could not quite gain the ascendancy--11 esults;— MEN’S SINGLES. —Second Round.— P. Te H. Jones (Maori) beat R. J.
