The amount of money and securities that the ‘ Gazette Du France ’ received from' clients is stated to total £s,ooo,ooo.—Australian Press Association. [A previous message stated: Known as Madam© La Presidente, a financial wizard who was operating one of the most gigantic get-rich-quick schemes ever devised, Madame Marthe Hanati was arrested with hei divorced husband, Lazare Bloch. The news spread very rapidly, and panic-stricken investors ruslied to the_ sumptuous marble-fronted offices which madame. with Bloch and a staff of 250, directed the enormous operations. Among the victims are deputies, priests, nuns, and widows of officers. It is stated that the total involved is over £1,000.000. The corcrspondent of tiro ‘Daily Telegraph ’ even mentioned possible losses of £3.500,000. The scandal was broached in the Chamber of Deputies, the Minister of Finance giving the assurance that justice would he done. Madame, besides running the ‘ Gazette du France,’ formed five share-investing companies, and had 4,000 agencies in France and abroad- Pai.l Hersent, legal adviser to the ‘Gazette du France,’ was arrested in connection with the case.}
