SCHOOL VACATIONS

GOLUiiA COLLEGE LONG LIST OF AWARDS If one cares to examine analytically the atmosphere of a school breaking-up ceremony, one will sense that, underlying all there is a feeling, common to parents, teachers, and pupils alike, which is infinitely more valuable and more lasting than the mere superficialities involved in the actual giving and receiving of prizes. Generally speaking, breaking-up day can bo regarded as the pleasant denouement of a successful year’s work, a year during which ' ihe pupils have taken yet another big stride towards the attainment of an education that will so equip them spiritually,_ mentally, and physically, that they will with ease bo able to take their places in adult life. In these days women as well as men are called upon to accept innumerable responsibilities, and so it is that the annual end of the year ceremony of a girls’ college has a significance practically as marked as that o fany other. That the excellent educational work being carried out at Columba College is being recognised and appreciated, was proved lasu evening, when a very large number of parents, relatives, and friends of the girls attended the breakup function in the Constance Hall. In addition to the distribution of a vast and handsome array of prizes for both scholastic and athletic achievement, there were many items of _ entertainment, musical and otherwise, which showed that due attention lias been given to the social side of a girl’s training. Still another pleasing feature of the ceremony was the manner in which prize-winners were applauded by their fellow pupils. Girls who had won exceptionally high honours wore enthusiastically cheered. The prize, it would seem, was but an outward token of the feeling .of mutual regard and friendship which had been fostered. The Rev. J. J, Cairney was in tho chair, and with him on_ the platform were Miss Ross (the principal of tho college), the members of the staff, the Moderator or the Presbyterian General Assembly, (the Rev. ’ Professor Hewitson), Hr W. H. Borrie, and Mr James Begg.Tho junior school, comprising some very tiny tots, distinguished itself in the items of entertainment which it provided, and the sweet singing and the dainty dancing were much appreciated by the grown-ups. The ceremony opened with the singing of the hymn ‘God Sees,’ which was followed by the reading of Psalm 100 by Mr Cairney. Then Miss Evelyn Tucker and Miss Lola Johnston recited ‘ Fairies ’ (Rose Fyleman) and ‘ Vespers ’ (A. A. Milne), respectively, each of these delightful juvenile _ pieces being given in a manner which revealed sound elocutionary training. A few little boys were present in the class which sang ‘The Cow’ (Dunhili), ‘ Little Jenny Wren ’ (Alec Rowley) and ‘ The Milkmaid ’ (French folk song. These also wore very pleasingly rendered. Then followed a most enjoyable exhibition of rhythmic dancing by the drill class, and, finally, Miss Ross presented thfe prizes to this section of the school.

“ Prior to this, however, two little pupils walked up on to the stage and presented bouquets to Miss Ross and to Miss Gillies (the head mistress of the junior school). Miss Ross expressed her appreciation of the work done in the junior school by Miss Gillies, Miss Gill, and Miss M'George, and announced that next year the junior section would start from Standard IV. and work downwards. Miss Gillies, to whom she was grateful for the earnest work and dilL gence she had shown, would have this section under her control. Standards V. and VI. would represent a junior high school. Before the senior portion of the programme was carried out, the chairman remarked with satisfaction that the great interest being taken in the school had been proved by the fact that such a large number of people had attended the ceremony, in spite of the inclemency of the weather. Ait or apologising for th absence of the chairman of the board of governors (Professor Davies), who was absent in Australia, Mr Cairney introduced the chief speaker of the evening, Professor Hewitson, who, ho said, had always taken a great interest in the school and all that conncerned it. The programme of the senior school was as follows;—College hymn (‘ Our Father,’ by George MacDonald), a prayer by the chairman, Scripture recitation from Proverbs viii by Miss Peggy Allan, songs, ‘ Sweet Nytuph (Morley) and ‘The Angel’ (Rubenstein)/by tho Colnmba Quartet; a dance by the senior dancing class; class songs, ‘ Tlio Swing ’ (R- L. Sto-T'enson-Shaw) and 1 T Love Sixpence (Carsc), by the junior choir; and a drill display by the senior drill squad. Professor Hewitson, who was greeted with applause, made a very happy speech, most suitable for the occasion. With humorous personal anecdotes and a breezy description of school life in other lands, he kept the audience in a state of constant merriment. With particular reference to girls’ schools, he took his listeners to Australia, Japan, China, Palestine, America, and Europe, in a manner quite absorbing. After speaking of the increased privileges, which, in these days gave girls and women a better time than formerly, the speaker paid an earnest tribute to tho character and work of Miss Ross and her staff. Miss Ross then awarded the senior prizes. The Navy League presentations were given out by Mr James Begg, after which ceremony _ tho chairman expressed his appreciation of tho work done during the year. The singing of the National Anthem closed the ceremony, PRIZE LIST.. Tho following was the prize list:— JUNIOR SCHOOL. (Awards for good work).
