CONGRATULATIONS!
PREMIER AND OTAGO MINISTERS EXPANSION LEAGUE HAS “ RENEWED HOPES " The following telegrams have been despatched by the Otago Expansion League To the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward:—“The Otago Expansion League tenders sincere congratulations on your acceptance as Prime Minister and the formation of your Cabinet. We would be honoured it you could meet a deputation from my league, the Chamber of Commerce, and other associations in Dunedin at a suitable date, say early in February, Will you kindly advise a date to meet your convenience.” To the Hon. T. K. Sidey:—“Congratulations and good wishes. The Otago Expansion League rejoices in your elevation and inclusion in the Ministry. As an old parliamentary hand, your knowledge and experience will bo of inestimable sendee. Good health and good wishes in your new sphere of activity.” To the Hon. W. B. Taverner:— “Sincere congratulations and good wishes from your friends in the Otago Expansion League. We trust you will tackle your onerous duties with courage and success. We have suggested that the Prime Minister meet a deputation in Dunedin in February, and would be gratified if you could attend Sir Joseph on that occasion. Dunedin looks forward with renewed hope.” EDUCATION BOARD'S RESOLUTIONS .Members of the new Ministry were congratulated this morning by members of the Otago Education Board upon their elevation .to Cabinet lank. “I think it would be becoming if the members of the board took notice of the elevation to Cabinet rank of Mr T. K. Sidey, who has done a great deal for education iu Otago. Though tho honour is belated, it is well deserved, and wo who know him so well congratulate him most heartily,” said the Chairman (Air J. Wallace), who moved that the board’s congratulations bo forwarded to Mr Sidey. “ Mr Sidey will certainly fill the position with credit to himself and to the city,” said tho Hon. D. T. Fleming, who expressed great pleasure in seconding the motion, which was carried by acclamation. Tho Chairman also said ho thought it would bo becoming if the board congiatulatod the new Alinister of Railways, Air W. B. Taverner, who was the mayor of the city. “ I don’t know it he knows very much about railways,” said the speaker jocularly, “but he will know a lot before ho finishes.” That Mr Taverner would make a thoroughly _ honest endeavour to fill the position with credit was Hie opinion of another member, and tho board decided to send congratulations to the new Alinister. Tho late Alinister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) also came in for some commendation, and it was decided to thank him for what he had done for education during his term. Tho Chairman said they appreciated very much what the Hon. Air Wright had done. The late Minister had not been bound by departmental regulations. Alessrs J. Horn and J. Mitchell also spoke appreciatively of what Air Wright had done. The latter said that when Mr Wright took over the Alinistrv he was consideranly hampered owing to the policy of his predecessor, but had still been able to do good work.
