SCOUT NOTES

[By Totem.] THE ROVER. A team of four from the Royer Troop entered for the novice section (first air and lifting) at the St Jofin Ambulance district competitions on Saturday afternoon last. The section was judged by Hi Fergus, the possible points being. 100, the Rover team, the winners gaining 05 A fine silver cup will now adorn the Rover Derv for the ensuing twelve months. A certificate was also presented to each member or the team. The attendance at the civic reception to Commander Byrd and comrades at the Council Chambers on Thursday evening' last, supplemented the usual parade of the Rovers, who afterwards met and shook hands with the commander and Mr Bropby. The expedition added interest to Scouts by reason of the inclusion of the American Scout, who : is representivo of the Scouts of America. The Rover Troop regrets that circumstances did not permit of an official welcome, but several Rovers had the pleasure of greeting and wishing their “Brother Scout the “best dl luck ’’ on his great adventure ■ , _ The news that the 4th (North Dunedin) Troop was to bo visited by the Scout accompanying the Expedition (Paul A. Siple) caused great excitement, and hi= arrival was cageily awaited. On his entry bcout Siple was greeted with three hearty cheers. After a short address of welcome Scouter Phelan presented the visitor with a greenstone tiki, decorated with the troop colours. Scout Siples briefly replied, shook hands with everyone, and left after all had wished him the best of luck and a safe return.

The ordinary work of the Ocean Beach troop is going ahead, despite the disorder of the hall through the alterations going on at the present time. A working bee, consisting of a number of the parents, assisted by a willing band oi Scouts and cnbbers, have transformed the interior of the hall beyond recognition. The newlylined building, with its locker seats, presents a neat and clean appearance, and many thanks aie due to the workers who, undei the able leadership of Mr Glue effected the change. Needless to say, the ladies were right on the spot with afternoon tea. The annual Christmas tea of the troop is fixed for December 8 ana is eagerly awaited by tho boys. A hearty welcome is extended to all parents and friends of the boys, also representatives of other committees, to attend tho hail at i .00. A special service was held tor the dedication of the Woodhaagh Troop s Union Jack on Sunday afternoon, there being a good attendance of the troop. District Scouter Moore and several Rovers were also present. In an interesting sermon the speaker impressed upon the boys the importance of the ceremony, and reminded them of their three-fold “promise.’ Tho key to real happiness was “service for others. If they thought of the ivord “ joy,” each letter would remind them of their intended place in the world. Tho Scout law was read by ono of the troop- After the ceremony tho troop had a short march and photos were taken An interesting and enthusing talk by the Scouter on the arrangements and suggested programme for the camp during the Christmas holidays, semaphore signalling practice, and games completed the evening s programme at the parade of the Utli Dunedin (Mohicans). _ General business and matters referring to the troop’s Christmas party were discussed at the committee meeting held afterwards. At the weekly meeting of tho Anderson’s Bay TrooJ) Scouters MTndoe and Barnes were in charge. Messrs Kirkwood and Malcolmson represented the. Troop Committee. As the weather was fine, most of the patrols worked outside. The signalling and ambulance patrols practised for the forthcoming competitions. The Stag Patrol is also working hard for tho pioneering competition. The Ravensbourne Scouts paraded last Friday, when there was a good attendance. The evening was spent in rehearsing for the concert to-morrow. Scouts are reminded of a full dress rehearsal to-night in the Coronation Hall at 7.30, when all ticket money is to be handed in. All Scouts are to be at the hall on Wednesday night at 7. On Thursday Mr Scott will hold a class of the cyclists, those attending to be at 183 George street between 7.30 and 7.45. On Friday night there will bo a farewell social to Scouter Williams. Scouts are to be at tho Diuids’ Hall at 7, and their parents and friends at 7.30, ladies to bring a basket. The Ravensbourne Cubs met last Saturday, when there was a good parade. Mr Blackman was in charge, and the boys worked well. The pack is beginning to show a decided improvement under Mr Blackman.
