VALLEY PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE

QUARTERLY iEETING The quarterly meeting of the Northeast Valley Progressive League was held in the school last evening, when Mr J, M. Wilson presided. After several members had complained of the bad lighting system on the Valley road, and especially at the tram stops, _it was decided that the secretary write to the City Council for a better and more distinctive lighting system at the tram stops. The Chairman referred to the statement that had appeared in the daily papers that the Dalmore Ratepayers’ Association were to obtain through the ihedium of Mr H. L. Tapley a post office at the Gardens, As the Valley league had been the primp movers in the matter, and still had it in hand, Mr Wilson wondered why the Dalmore Association had moved in the matter without consulting the Valley League. In order to clear up the question, he had asked the Dalmore Association to have representation at last night’s meeting, and ho was pleased to see the president (Mr J. Faulds) with them. Air Faulds explained that his association had approached Air Tapley for a telephone box and a post office box at Dalmore, and the other question had cropped up at the same time, so they decided to make use of the opportunity. —Air Faulds was thanked for his explanation. A rather heated argument ensued before it was finally resolved that the matter be dropped. Mr Taylor moved that the Northeast Valley Progressive League, in conjunction with the Dalmore and Opoho Leagues, form a deputation to meet tiie Postmaster-General in reference to the establishment of a Poet Offic and Money Order Offioo at the Gardens.— The motion was unanimously carried. Complaints re a dilapidated building that existed on the Main road and that a section nearby was used for the stabling of horses were substantiated by two women who lived near by, and who attended the meeting. Both said that when the wind was blowing at night the noise arising from the rattling of iron prevented them from obtaining sleep. In the summer time the residents nearby were annoyed with flics owing to the presence of the building and the horses. Air C. Moss drew the meeting's attention to the rateable value of the property, but the Chairman averred that £ s.d. did not enter into the question whore the health of women and children was concerned. Mr Moss agreed with this statement, and said that he was only trying to emphasise the change needed m the present rating system. '-Air H. Galland said that the league had already drawn the attention of the City Council and tho Health Department to the matter, but nothing hod been done. On his motion it was decided to again bring the matter before these two bodies and ask that the nuisance be removed.

The secretary was instructed to write to the telegraph engineer asking him to erect 3 telephone bos at the upper Junction. , Messrs J. M. Wilson and W. Millow were appointed delegates to attend a general conference of delegates from other associations, to be held for the purpose of discussing matters of general interest.
