HER STRANGE RIG
The City of Now_York is a small vessel to bo barque-rigged. At tho fore the topgallant yard is tho loftiest of her “ branches,” no _ provision being made for anything higher. On tho main the royal mast is given over to the crow’s nest for accommodation of tho look-out man when ice floes impart a nip to the atmosphere and drift ico makes navigation hazardous. Therefore the topgallant sail is the loftiest canvas of the main also. The mizen mast merely carries the spanker, which in this case brails in to tho mast when tho yards are squared and the barque runs free. The white-painted hull carries a sung superstructure, tho standing rigging and running gear all placed in conformity with the tradition of tho sea. The innovations have been introduced to specially equip tho vessel for tho expedition. On her long poop a large structure has been placed to provide additional accommodation. A long funnel placed behind tho mainmast, but reaching to the level of tho main yard, provides outlet for the smoke from the furnaces of tho steam boiler which supplies steam for tho auxiliary engines. On hor arrival at Port Chalmers tho vessel went into dry dock, where she will bo cleaned and inspected before she loaves for Ross Sea.
