AMATEURS REGISTER FAST TIMES MEETING AT MOSGIEL As a preliminary effort lo its big afternoon meeting in the New Year, the Taicn Amateur Aathlctic Club staged a successful sports meeting at Mosgicl on Saturday afternoon, and while the attendance was rather disappointing, tho meeting was well supported b,y town athletes, and some exciting racing was witnessed, botli in the running and cycling events. A feature of tho afternoon was the performance of B. Provo, of the Anglican Chib, in carrying off the honours in all three jumps with very fair efforts m each. The Leith Club accounted for both tho half anc mile, S. King winning the former from tho exChristchurch runner, C. J Thompson, after a fine race, and C 11 Ward winning the latter from King 1 Long handicap, men accounted for the sprints, while tho cycling races were well contested, tho fields in both running and cycling events being of a most satisfactory nature The starter was Mr J. Gilchrist, while the secretarial arrangements were in tho capable hands of Mr J. M'Cartney who had the assistance of an energetic hand of officers including members of tho Otago Amateur Athletic Centre. The track was in good order and some fast times were recorder, during tho afternoon, principally by the men on longer marks. Results 100 YARDS HANDICAP, First heat;'M. G Valk (3yds) 1, W. Farr (Syds) 2, W. Fraser (syds) S. A good race, Yalk finishing well to win by a yard, Fraser a foot back in third place. Time, 10 -6sec. Second heat: P. G. Ward (11yds) 1, F. Mouat (7jyds) 2, A. Holt (s*ydsl 3. Won by 2yds, a yard between second and third. Time, 10 2-ssec. —Final,— Ward 1 Valk ... ... 2 Fan’ 3 Ward led all the way, and he was hard put to retain his lead over tho last bit. Holmes began a’ a fast bat, but Henry took tho load with hall the distance covered, and won comfortably from Holmes, Cabot, tho scratch man, being third. Time, 3min llsec. ONE-MILE HANDICAP. G. R. Pope (75yds) 3 Ward, who ran a well-judged race, was always well placed, and, finishing strongly, he beat King up the straight to win with something in hand, Pops being third. Time, 4min 44sec.
