NOTES ON THE EVENTS

I. By St. Cl a iu.] The South Canterbury Jockey Chib’s tnuumcr Meeting was concluded in ideal summer weather, but tho attendance was disappointing, and tho totalisator turnover, again showed a falling olf. No fewer than four races only attracted ouc-dividend holds, and this no doubt affected both tho attendance and tho turnover. Tho racing was not as interesting as usual, and only Tardy and Some Rose of the Southern horses sue*ccedcd in winning races. There is no doubt that tho meeting is held too soon after the big carnival week m Christchurch, both for horses and tho general public, and tho percentage of horses showing signs of soreness racing at the lixturo was unusually high. Tho course was hard and fast, too hard for many of tho horses to show their true form. Air Norman Al'Lcau was again successful as a--starter, and lie has a good, quick eye, which enables him to get his lields away without delays tho first time they are in lino. Ho is a welcome addition to the list of starters in tho dominion.

Troilus was scut out a few pounds better backed in tbo Levels Hurdles Handicap than tbo first day’s winner, Tunamoc, each being much better backed than Monatic, who was next in favour. Erin-go-Bragh at once took charge, Lunatic unseating his rider at the first fence, and led Tunamoo and Troilus throughout tho journey. At th-j last hurdle both Tunamoo and Troilus niado efforts to catch Erm-go-Bragh, but tho latter stayed on to beat Tunamoo by a length, with tho favourite three lengths farther hack third, and Sbandro was a poor fourth. Investments, £975.

Eirst Laid nnd_ Wreath ot Myrtle were withdrawn from tho Claremont Hack Handicap, and Bank Draft was made a much better than J’.ago Loy, with Impertinence, Filosol, and Royal Flower nest in demand. Rngo Boy and th<y Aloni were tho first out but Lank Draft raced past them after going half a furlong, and was then steadied. Lag© Boy wont to the front at tho end of a and led Impertinence ami La go Boy into fhc straight. At the distance Pago Boy had tho race won, and Eilosal, Boya! Flower, and Impertinence wero lighting it out for second place. Page Boy finished two lengths in front of Royal Flower, who heat Filosol by half a length. Impertinence and Star Raid were next. Filosol and Star Raul were both slow to find their icct at the start. Investments, £9951-

In a one dividend field, through tbo withdrawal of Some Rose, Battle Colours was sent out a warm favourite in tho South Canterbury Handicap, with Prickles and Gay Sonnet tho best backed of the others. Gay Sonnet at onco went to the front, and at the end of half a mile was four lengths clear of the favourite and Beau Oestc. Across tho top Battle Colours and Prickles moved up, but Gay Sonnet was stdl in charge at the homo turn, where Beau Gesto moved up. Tho latter took charge inside the distance post, and, stalling off a challenge from the badly-ridden Prickles, beat her home by a length. Gay Sonnet was half a length further back, with Vaward a. lair fourth. Investments, £1,422.

The withdrawal of Dolcairo from tho Juvenile Handicap, for two-year-olds, left another one dividend held, and Desert Song, who was credited with showing a lot of pace in his was sent out an even money chance. From, a good lino out Desert Song, on tho rails, Captivate, and Colonel Quex ran half a furlong together; then Captivate wont to tho front, and was four lengths clear of the favourite, with Colonel Quex next. At the distance post Captivate was headed by Desert Song, who in turn was challenged by Might Lad. Eighty yards from the post Night Lad headed Desert Song; then tho latter got in front again for a few strides, but Night Lad came again in the last few strides and beat the favourite by a, short head, Captivate a, length and a-half away third, and Colonel Quex next. Jock o’ Hazeldean was slow to lump out, and tailed off tho field all the way. Tho winner belongs to P. T. Hogan, and the win was one of tho most popular at tho meeting. Divestments, £1,1591.

Rascal and Moratorium were withdrawn from tho Stewards’ Handicap, leaving a throe-horse field, of which iUoncv Mine was sent out a better favourite than Quarterdeck, but the public were again astray in their judgment* for .Gold Erick at once took

long enough to beat Money Mine by a lug enough to beat Money Mine by a iength and a-lialf, with Quarterdeck the same distance oft third. Investments, £967. ' •

In a held of fourteen in the Inal Handicap Singer and Toawai vrerq equally backed, and shared favouritism with Uproar, Sweet Refrain, and Waving Com the next fancied. Evening was left from an otherwise good start, and Singer, Joy Bridge, Bon Raid, Sea Raid, and Full Flight were just in front of a bunched Held; then Sea Raid took charge, but was headed again by Singer, who led Sea Raid, Joy Bridge, Sweet Refrain, Full Flight, 'and loawai iilto the straight. At the distance Uproar headed Singer, and was challenged over the last hundred yards by Toawai, and in a good finish tho latter got up to win by a neck from Uproar, who beat Full Flight by a length foi second money. Singer, Sweet Refrain, and Waving Corn were next. Investments, £1,6891.

in the Kingsdewii Hack Handicap Zeuxis was sent out a few pounds bettor favourite than Tardy, with Money Peer and Arrowy also well backed. From a good start Arrowy led out from Tardy, and the order right to tho distance post was Arrowy, Tardy, Zeuxis, and Money Peer. Then Tardy put in a claim, and catching Arrowy 50yds from the post just beat him by a head. Zeuxis was two lengths further back, and Money Peer a good fourth. Claret Cup was last. Investments, £l,47S}.

All four acceptors went to tho post for tho Farewell Handicap, and alter spirited betting between the two southern-owned marcs, Some Rose and Eaton Bells, tho latter finished up a little better backed. From an even despatch Money Order led Some Rose ami Receipt, who were running together, to tho far turn; then tho order across the top was Money Order, Some Rose, and Receipt, tho favourite, who did not jump out as smartly as the others, being about three lengths behind Receipt.' Some Rose ran up to Money Order turning for home, and shortly afterwards both Receipt and Some Rose ran past Money Order. From the distance post Eaton Bells put in a good run, and passing Receipt opposite fho stand just failed by half a length to reach Some Rose at the post. Receipt was a similar distance away third, and Money Order was beaten oft'. Investments, £1,675.
