NOTES OH THE EVENTS [By St. Claii;.! The South Canterbury Jockey Club s Sutiiincr Alcotiiig opened at Wa.shdyke in bright ami sultry weather and be I ore ono oF the poorest attendances seen on the course for twenty years past. Hie fields were small and the racing not verv interesting, but the causes.ot the poor attendance probably were that tbe meeting was hold too soon after the New Zealand Cup carnival, and the majority of the country people were busy shearing. The totalisator tin never was a disappointing one. The principal handicap proved to bo the best of good things for First Sight, who got into trouble at the torn out of tho straight. The sensation of the meeting was caused by the r.cler of Great Star, who won tho Tycho Hack Race very easily Irom a hot fat (.unite in First Raid, not being able to draw the correct weight on returning to the scales. It was this lad’s first winning ride, and the shortage was not caused by him dropping any lend or rubbers from las saddle. Solmso was very lame in front when she icturned to the enclosure after the Tesehemafior H; ndi-c-iip. and tho last of this good nmro has been seen on the racecourse. She was going particularly well when she broke down at the to]) of the straight, and looked like a winner. Air Norman M'Loan, of Ambcrley, officiated as starter, and his despatches were even and prompt throughout. The course was very fast, and good times were recorded throughout. * * » » Troilus was withdrawn from the Otaio Hurdles, and the Biccarton-trained Ned Kelly was sent out a lew pounds bettor backed than Bonatie, with the Southlander (Tunarnoe) and Carinthiu the host backed of tho others. Ned Kelly at once went to the front, and led ilangatahi and Tnnamoe over the first six furlongs. Then Tunarnoe ran up to Ilangatahi, but lost ground at the hurdle five furlongs from home. Crossing tlie top both Tunamoo and Eangatahi moved up to Ned Kelly, and the three took off at the last hurdle in line, Ned Kelly losing a couple of lengths before the other two landed. Tunarnoe was just in front of Ilangatahi ct the last fence, and ran home a good winner by two lengths from Ilangatahi, with the favourite six lengths away third. Carinthia was a pour fouith and Bonatie last. Investments, £B92}. * * * ♦ Ju the Spring Stakes, for two-year-olds and upwards. The Missioner * and Scrambler were withdrawn, and in a field of fourteen, only Page Boy, Belcaire (a two-year-old by Treciarc— Bhanavar), and Desert Song were backed. Colonel Quex, Caterpillar, and Page Boy began Hie best, Belcairo moving in just as tho barrier rose, After going a furlong, Colonel Quex was just clear of Caterpillar, with Pago Boy and Belcairo close up. At tho home turn, Pago Boy, Caterpillar, and Colonel' Quex were on terms, in front, with Melenire on tho outside, and at the distance post the latter had Pago Boy’s measure, and boat him home by two lengths. Waving Corn f&ur lengths further back, ffiiisuod fast, and just heat Colonel Quex for third place. Caterpillar and Tlie Atom next. Investments, £3544. x * •* * Beau Geste was withdrawn from the Teschemakcr Handicap, leaving a one dividend field, of which First Sight was sent out a good favourite, with Battle Colours tlie next best fancied, nearly three times as well barked as cither of the other throe. Prickles lost two or Hirrc lengths at tlie start, being held just a fraction of a second too long when the harrier was released. Solrose, followed by A r nwnrd, led out of the straight, where both Vaward and Prickles ran very wide, tho latter appearing to he interfered with by tho favourite, and Battle Colours also met trouble. .Solrose drew; out three or four lengths front A'award, with Battle Colours and First Sight next as they raced along the back. Three furlongs from homo the field closed on Solrose, but the Wingatni mare was still just a little in front of Battle Colours as they turned into the straight, where the favourite was lying last. Before reaching the distance post. Battle Colours was in charge, Solrose having dropped out. and was leading Vaward and Prickles. Then the favourite put in his claim, and. ridden out with hands and heels, he got up to heat Battle Colours by a length. Prickles was nearly three lengths away third, just in front of A r award. Investments, £1,27-I',. > » M » lii the Tycho Hack Handicap, Mr Samson’s pair, Redd Jaz zand Tea Girl, and Filosel were withdrawn, and First Raid was sent out a hot favourite. Campanula, Eliminator, and Great Star being the best backed of the others. Arrowy's rider appeared to be caught unprepared when the barrier rose, and he was left several lengths. Great Star began the best, and led First Raid and Eliminator along the back.

Campanula nearly fell after going a lurking, and lost a lot of ground. GreatStar was four lengths in front of the favourite turning into tho straight, with Eliminator and Kilboa next. At the distance tho favourite made a feeble challenge, ■ hut could make no impression on (treat Star, the latter winning comfortably by two lengths from First Raid, who beat Campanula by half a length for second money, with Arrowy close up fourth. Great Star’s rider, R. Rcikcrhy, failed to draw (he weight on returning to the scale, and his horse was disqualified, leaving First Raid the winner. The favourite was lucky in several ways, as it looked as if both Campanula and Arrowy would have also beaten him Intel they been better handled. Investments, £1,003). Crown Area was the only withdrawal from tho President’s Handicap, for which Quarterdeck was made a good favourite, with Malmsey. Rascal, and Amor tlie only others well backed. Amor was the" first out, but quickly gave way to Gold Brick, who led Amor, Rascal, and the lavourito along the back and across tho top. Gold Brick retired at the entrance to the straight, and Amor led Rascal and Quarterdeck to the distance post, where Malmsey moved up. She made a good run, but failed to reach Amor by hall a length. Quarterdeck was two lengths further back third, and Rascal next. Investments, £1,024). « * « * The largest Held ol the day went to the post lor the Alaiden Plate, and the betting between Singer, ’loawai, and Eilosofwas fairly even, and Uproar was tlie only other starter _ well backed. Filosol.'on the rails, missed the jump out when the barrier rose, and hull Elmlii was the first to show out, hub quieklv gave way to Singer Bolero, Bon Raid, and Full Flight, the termer k-adiim round the far turn Horn Full Flight and Bon Raid. Siuger was first into the straight from Full Flight, Bon Raid, and Sweet Retrain. At the distance Full Flight challenged Singer and just when the favourite appeared to have settled Full Flight Sweet ImIniiii. (UKi ol tlif ol lik’ t-oM, and Uproar appeared on the scene. In a splendid finish Uproar was the first In drop out, and Sweet. Relrain jus*heat. Sinner hv a short hall-length. Uproar w'as two lengths away Hurd half a length in front of hull h ighl and T'oawai. Tim winner is by 'lhiirnlmm from Refrain, a mare by Soldiers Chorus, who wa> bred by Mr Allan t Ward at Riverton. InvcH merits, £1,268). * * h Wreath of Myrtle wa.-, withdrawn f nun the Kerry town Hack Handicap, for which Zeuxis was sent out lavourite Impertinence and Aloney leer being next in demand. From a good start* Arrowy was the fust out, but was quickly joined by Impertinence, the pair leading Bank Draft across Hie top and into the straight. Impertinence dropped out hetorc reaching the distance post, where Bank Dralt head'd Arrowv and heat him home comfortably by a length and a-liall. Tardy finished well, and boat Hie favourite by half a length lor Hurd money. Investments, £l-153- * * w * The club was extremely unlucky in Crown Area and Eaton Bolls being withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, leaving only a mio-dividend field to close the day’s sport. Gay Sonnet, with Emerson up, was sent out a warm favourite, and, leading all the way, avoii comfortably by a couple of lengths from Aloney Mine, who beat Some Bose by six lengths for second money.
