Posters in {he blackest types informed London that the “ Australians were skittled.” Critics are busily pointing out the superiority ot tho English team, apparently overlooking tho"fact that the Australian eleven is not precisely the Brisbane test team. Tho “ Sporting .Diarist ” of the ‘Standard’ says: “Australia, seems to have selected the test team on tho basis of what the M.C.C.‘.has done, lie for© ho met Hammond, Jardinc, llcndrcn, and Co. Blackio was declared to be Australia’s best bowler; but ■where is ho now? Likewise, where are J.lartkopf, Beolt, Niehols, and Hooker'{’ ’
The ‘ Evening News,’ in its first editorial, headed ‘ Sunshine from Australia,’ says; ‘‘England won by a fierce determination to win, a relentless attack, ball by ball, and grim obduracy in defence.” Tho ‘Evening News’ adds: “ Jt must bo remembered that tiio Australian eleven contained the best youthful Australian ■ batting, as well as all-round ability. Howling that is capable of shifting such an eleven twice for -17-1 will subduo tho Australian critics who were inclined to nnder-rato it.” A. Sandhain says: “Tho team work neecssary for such a win disposes of tho ridiculous stories of snobbery and bad feeling.” In tho midst of the general panegyric J. W. H. T. Douglas warns Englishmen that there were important omissions from Australia’s eleven, which could not bo regarded as representative. “ Nevertheless, it makes me hopeful,” ho adds. Air P. E. Warner regards tho win with pleasure. “ Hut the more 1 look at tho names of tho Australian team,” lie said, “ the more 1 realise how powerful is tho batting, while the bowling lias variety, but L fancy we have superiority in fielding, especially in the slips.” —Australian Press Association.
