MEETING OF CREDITORS
HOTELKEEPER’S FAILURE Tlio adjourned meeting of creditors in tho estate of Benjamin Newman, formerly hotelkeeper of Port Chalmers, was hold in. Hie Official Assignee’s •office yesterday afternoon, tho Assignee "(Dir J, DI. Adams) presiding. Mr \V. L. Dlooro appeared for the bankrupt. Tlio Assignee said that since the previous meeting, Dir Glut worthy, the bankrupt’s partner, Juul called ou him and made a. statement, which was practically the same as that made by the bankrupt. Clatworthy’s sworn statement was to tho effect that ho was a ware of tbo saio to DPKenzie ami of the arrangements about _ tho sale, but there was nothing in writing between him and bankrupt. After the sale fell through ho did not go back to the hotel. Me gave Newman a month's notice in May hist, and the partnership was terminated in. Juno, since which lie had had no word _or dealings with Newman. If M'Kcnzic’s sab laid gono through everything that was owing would have been squared up. The balance sheet up to Juno 28 showed that he owed tho partnership £ll2 15s sd. There had never been any suggestion that lie owed the amount of £214 5s vd to Newman, lie could not make any oiler regarding the £ll2 at the present time. Examined by tho Assignee, tlio bankrupt said that from the beginning of June until September 7 his total takings were £1,032, of which £315 was banked. Tlio total outgoings during that time were IIS balance, about £SO, being retained by the bank as interest on tho overdraft. Ho was unable to make any offer to his creditors. Tho meeting was adjourned smo die to enable further enquiries to be made from parties interested.
