Many questions were asked in the 'House"of Commons io-day regarding the loss of ilio Vostris. Replying, Mr Williams, Under-Secre-tary of tlic Board of Trade, said that tho form of tho inquiry to be held in this country was not yet decided, but .the inquiry would cover_ all _ material points. As to the responsibilities of the Board of Trade, Mr Williams said that all passenger ships trading to and from ports in this country were thoroughly surveyed by tho Board of Trade surveyors at least onco a year. All oceangoing vessels carrying large numbers of thircT class passengers underwent a fut tber survey before beginning each voyage. Asked-whether the inspectors of the Board of Trade had any responsibility for the proper storage of cargo below decks, Mr Williams replied that this responsibility rested on tho persons concerned in sending ships to sea-. The Board of Trade surveyors did nob intervene unless there was reason to thin' that a ship was improperly loaded and could not go to sea without danger to lifo. -lie added that all British liners carried boats for nil on board, and in addition rafts up to 25 per cent, of tbe number of persons on board.
