'TEMPEST'
Working all night in a sea of mud, in which at times men. horses, and army transport wagons sank so deep that they had to be pulled out with the aid of motor trucks, the John Barrymore company was forced to overcome many obstacles daring the filming of the spectacular sequences of ‘Tempest,’ a United Artists’ picture, which unfolds a powerful story of romance and revolution in modern Russia. ’‘'■impest * comes to the Strand Thcon Friday. Scores of giant sun ; turned night into day ns the synthetic rainstorm raged on a set several acres in area at the United Artists’ studio in Hollywood. Hundreds of actors, some of them veterans of the prerevolution Tsarist armies, worked in the scenes. Barrymore, playing a Russian peasant officer, who tails in love with a princess, presented a bedraggled appearance as he floundered through the mire. The night’s work was in strange contrast to scenes made the previous afternoon, when the star, immaculate in his officer’s uniform, danced with Camilla Horn, in the role of the princess, at a court ball which picturises all the gaiety and luxury of the Russia that was. The intensive day and night schedule during the filming of ‘ Tempest ’ was necessitated by the fact that Barrymore’s new feature, which was directed by Sam Taylor, represents work on more separate sets and involves a great financial outlay. Besides Camilla Horn, Barrymore s supporting cast includes Louis v> oilman, George Fawcett, Ullrich Haunt, Boris do Fas, Lena Malona, and %. bert Conti.
