‘THE COSSACKS’

EMPIRE’S NEXT ATTRACTION Picked soldiers of an “ invisible army )! —men who in several wars battled under the banner of ibo Tsar, and who, disbanded by revolution, arc in many lands waiting the call once again to take up arms tor their lather!and—these arc the men. who ride with John Gilbert in ‘The Cossacks,’ spectacular new drama of Russia, coming on Friday to the Empire Theatre. When plans were made to film ‘ The Cossacks,’ a vivid story of the Russian steppes, with Gilbert in tho role of a Cossack soldier and Rcnco Adoreo as tho heroine, General Theodore Lodi, once commander of the Russian Imperial Guard, and also a fugitive since the revolution, was called in. Through him the Cossacks were recruited, many of them, like Alex Kins, one of the riders, former soldiers in his own regiment. A complete Russian town was built as one of its settings, and Russians, recruited from Russian settlemerits in California, made it their home, several hundreds of them—men, women, and children—living there just as they did in Russia before tho war. They brought their national costumes which they wore in the homeland. Russian was the language spoken. They carried on native customs, worshipped in tho Russian church. Their own household goods, their ikons and sacred images, were installed in their homes, and these became tho settings for the picture. The only people in tho cast not Russian were the principals.
