Mr and Mrs J. A. Haggitt, also tho Misses Haggitt, left this morning for Invercargill to attend the marriage of their eldest son to Miss Peggy Stewart, daughter of Dr Arthur Stewart. A Wellington Association message announces tho death of Mr 6. H. Scales, head of the firm of George H. Scales, Ltd., well known in shipping circles. Ho returned to New Zealand by the Mauuganni on Monday seriously ill, and was taken direct to a private hospital, where ho died yesterday afternoon. Father Hanrahan arrived here yesterday from Ireland to take up duty in the diocese of Dunedin.

To represent New Zealand at tne International Civil Aeronautical Convention in Washington next month Mr H. R. Dix, of the Marlborough Aero Club, and Captain N. H. Barlow, of tho Air Force, loft Auckland by tho Aorangi last night. They will return next March. Commandatorc Michaelo Blunno, Royal Consul of Italy for New Zealand, advises that his Government has appointed Cavalier© Viovanni Formichella, late of Italian Consulate-General in New York, to the Wellington post. Signor and Signora Fonnichella are expected to arrive in Wellington about December 25 Signor Blunno will leave New Zealand for Italy next January to report to headquarters. Mr A. E. Ausell was freely congratulated by members of tho Otago Motor Club last night on his election to Parliament. Mr Ansell thanked the members, and pointed out that the club had never been associated with party politics. Although he had been returned as a Reform candidate, politics would not bo introduced into tho club.

At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the chairman (Mr E. L. Macassey) referred to the death by drowning of three harriers—Messrs James 801 l and R. Jeffrey (St. Kilda) and A. Jeffrey (Civil Service). St. Kilda Club had already sent a note of sympathy to Mr Bell’s relatives. It was resolved to send letters of condolence to tho relatives of the deceased harriers, members standing in silence for a moment as a mark of respect.

Opportunity was taken at last night’s meeting of tho Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to make a presentation to Mr H. T. Emmerson, the sports secretary, on the occasion of Ids approaching marriage. The presentation of a case of stainless cutlery, forks, and spoons was made by the president (Mr E. L. Macassey), who said that Mr Emmerson had been sports secretary of tho centre for some time, and had done a tremendous amount of work on behalf of the sport willingly and ungrudgingly. He was an excellent sports secretary, and the centre officials and athletes of Otago had combined in making him a presentation. Messrs P. W. Breen, C. W. Clark, E. C. Isaacs, F. 1). Gibson, and J. Nelson endorsed the remarks of the chairman; and on behalf of the Caversham Club Mr C. K. Heaton presented Mr Emmerson with a dining room clock. Mr Heaton said that Mr Emmerson had rendered yeoman service to the Cavershara Club, both in an administrative capacity and as an active runner. Ho had also been a selector and handicapper for the club. Air Emmerson returned thanks on behalf of himself and his future wife, and said he hoped to retain his active interest in the sport. At last evening’s meeting of the Dunedin Ratepayers’ Association the success of Mr A. E. Ansell (president of the association) at tho General Election was referred to by the chairman of the evening (Mr P. L. Ritchie). A motion offering the congratulations of the association to Air Ansel] was carried by acclamation. At yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the council of the Otago University Air T. K. Sidey was re-elected to the position of Chancellor and Mr W. J. Morrell to the position of Vice-Chancellor. Mr J. A Bond, a well-known Auckland artist, arrived last evening. He will be in Dunedin for about a week. A London cable states that Sir Thomas Mackenzie will leave for New Zealand by the Remuera on November 2-3.
