INVERCARGILL The Supremo Court sittings opened this morning before Mr Justice MacGregor. John Gorry and Thomas David alias’ Davis, two Syrians, were each sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on two charges of breaking and entering and theft involving a total of £/b in money and £35 in goods, the sentences to be concurrent with those imposed in Dunedin recently. His Honour said that accused were professional criminals. and no doubt members of a gang. GISBORNE The Supremo Court sittings opened to-dav, Mr Justice Ostler presiding. The court is engaged in the retrial ol George Campbell, who is charged with setting on fire the stables of the Rosebud Hofei. At the last sitting of the court the jury failed to agree. PALMERSTON NORTH The quarterly session of the Suprein® Court, the last for 1928, opened Hus morning before Mr Justice Smith, who informed the grand jury that there ivere no cases for their consideration. The only ease for trial was one in which the accused had already been tried, and the Court of Appeal had ordered a retrial. A trim bill having been found already, there was no need for the grand jury to reconsider the case. Robert M'Conkey, an elderly man, was placed on trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a female at Aorangi. The court was cleared and an order made forbidding publication of the evidence. —Press Association.
