THE FIRST TEST.—RYDER AS CAPTAIN. LONDON, November 20. —The ‘ Daily Chronicle,’ commenting on the Australian tost team, says; “It is a strange position for \Voodful, who is Ryder’s state captain, to find himself serving under one of las own men,” With regard to Ironmonger, it says: “it is said that more than one expert on legitimate bowling action is not satisfied as to the fairness of his delivery.” Strudwick expressed surprise at Ryder’s captaincy, but added; “You can take it from me, the Australian selectors know their business. In my experience they made very few mistakes.” BILLIARDS.—FRED. LINDRUM v. INMAN. LONDON, November 10.—Inman (received 2,000), 2,855 (breaks 111 and 100) v. Fred. His desire to create a favourable impression was \ibvious from the outset, though it often proved his undoing. He tried to score faster than Inman, and although he succeeded, most of his breakdowns came from ridiculously easy strokes. To-uiglit the unfortunate loss of the white drove him to the red ball, with which lie made the limit of 75. ELECTION—HON. G. J. ANDERSON PROBABLY OUT.
