ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
MINE FATALITY. UNION PRESIDENT KILLED. An accident resulting in the death of Harry Chilton, president of the Minors’ Union, occurred at the Blackball Mine at 8 o’clock yesterday morning, when deceased, with three mates, was working at.a face A popper drill was being worked by Chilton and _T. Leitch, and the noise'of the machine prevented their hearing the strata move on the roof. About three tons fell, pinning Chilton against the drill and throwing I/eitch down just clear, and also slightly injuring a third man, A. MlClure. A fourth man, M‘Donald, extricated Leitch, but two hours were caken in getting Chilton out. He died five hours later. Mr Chilton tom, a loading part, if Blackball activities. He was fifty-three years of age and was a native of Staffordshire, England. He had been twenty-one years in New Zealand. Ho leaves a widow and two married daughters.—Greymouth telegram. FOUND DROWNED. An old resident, Mrs Harrington, wife of John Harrington, a carrier, of Mangatamoka, was found drowned in a creek yesterday. afternoon. Sho was missed from home and a search was made.—Pahiatna Association message. ■
