UNITED STATES ELECTIONS Prohibition NOT A FACTOR laaaewwawp v 11 iih. ai ■yiiiii w Destitute of sound argument in favour of prohibition, the New Zealand Alliance makes the ridiculous assertion that Mr. Hoovers Election as President is a prohibition victory. In doing so the New Zealand Alliance is merely making a dying clutch at a flimsy straw. Not only must it be remembered that Mr. Hoover’s party has been returned in a majority at the last seven United States Elections; but it must be remembered that the prohibition planKs in both the Republican and Democratic Parties’ platforms were identical at this Election, Here are the planks^:— SMITH’S PARTY (; Democratic ) “Speaking for the national Democracy, this convention pledges the party and its nominees to an honest effort to enforce the eighteenth amendment and all other provisions of the federal constitution and ail law enacted pursuant thereto.” With these identical prohibition planks i and Republican Parties voted practically I HOOVER’S PARTY ( Republican ) “The Republican party pledges itself and its nominees to the observance and vigorous enforcement of this provision cf the constitution.” their respective platforms the Democratic e same as if the prohibition problem did not exist. These two Parties arc not and never have been opposed on the prohibition problem, which cuts clean across party lines as in New Zealand. Both candidates for the Presidency had no option but to include enforcement planks in their party platforms, because prohibition bad been embedded in the Constitution without reference to the people, and their oath of office gave them no alternative but to uphold the Constitution. The People of the United States have never had a chance to vote against prohibition. When the Canadians were given the Bntnnilniniangmrl - —MinwiiiiiimiiiitiiiiiTiiiiiiii mm I irmn n m chance, they repealed it. It is only when a nation-wide referendum is taken for or against the repeal of prohibition, that the world will realise what failure prohibition is. / what 'The referendum held in New South did Wales in September, ONLY TWO Australia MONTHS AGO, showed a majority \say7 of 527,957 FOR CONTINUANCE.
