The opening event, the Whiteleigh Handicap, was the best of propositions for the fifth favourite, Katnte. who rushed to the front from the start, and although the field gained on her at the far turn in the second circuit, she regained her advantage at the home bend, and entering the straight with a clear advantage from Nouimahal, Nelson Boy, and Mangoutu, went on to win, easing up, by_ three lengths from Mangoutu, who finished on better than Nelson Boy and bent him by two lengths for second money. Nonrmahal wn» a length away next, followed by Sarsaparilla, ’Frisco Beau, and Our Lady. Young Carbine galloped at the start, and Nelson M‘Kinney stopped badlv when racing next to the leader in the second round. '■ » » » • The New Zealand Derby Stakes attracted a good class field, and Wrackler was a pronounced favourite. His supporters never had an anxious moment,- as the Ashburton -colt quickly got into his stride and led throughout. Grand Light, Lindberg,' Muriel De Oro, and Sonoma Child followed her into tho straight, but Wrackler was riot extended to win comfortably by two lengths from Grand Light, who was half a length in front of Muriel Ue Oro. Lindberg was a moderate fourth, followed by Sonoma Child and Tactless, with Guy Denver last.

The two last-named and Guy Denver were slow to move off and never got within reach of the field. The winner outclassed the opposition, and stamped himself as a high-class thrcc-ycar-old.

The Courtenay Handicap was an interesting race throughout, tho puhlu again displaying good judgment. Tatirckareka led until three furlongs from home, where ho retired beaten, and The Abbey was first into the straight from Kingcraft, Author Jinks, Quality, and Bonny Logan. Tho Abbey weakened in the run home, and Kingcraft shot to tho front. Ho was challenged by Author Jinks, but held him off to win by half a length. The Abbey was three lengths away, clear of Quality and Bonny Logan. Western King broke up at tho s|art and Machine Gun was slow to move off. Pageant and Golden Bubbles carried most support in the November Handicap. Harold Bnnvood was responsible for a- fast pace being set over the first circuit, and at tho end of six furlongs was several lengths out in front of Orphan, Jean AUElwyn, Firelight, Ariki, and Vesuvius. The leader war collared three furlongs from home, and Vesuvius, who-made a fast run along the back, led into the straight from Trimmer, Harold Bnnvood, and Firelight. Vesuvius was not troubled in tho run homo to record a meritorious victory by a length from Firelight, who put in some telling work in tho straight and beat Trimmer by two lengths for second money. Jean AUElwyn was close up, fourth, with Pinto well back at the head of the remainder.

Gulden Bubbles and Rebel wore the slowest to move off, and Epigram also lost ground before settling down.

Much interest was evinced in tile Free for All, Gn-at Bingen carrying! twice as many tickets as entrusted to | Peter Bingen, with Jewel Pointer only a few chances away. Native Chief | played up at the start, and did not j move off until the remainder were well ; on the way. Peter Bingen soon took charge and led hroughout. He was closely attended by Jewel Pointer, Great Bingen, and Prince Pointer over j the first circuit, and approaching the : homo turn the leader had half a length to spare from Jewel Pointer, with the same distance separating Great Bingen and Prince Pointer. Peter Bingen increased his advantage entering the straight, and his success was assured; but lie was stopping at the finish, and Prince Pointer, finishing on with a burst of speed from 'he top of the homo | inn, got to within a head of him. Jewel Pointer was three lengths away, half a length in front of the favourite. P.oter Bingen registered a sterling performance, and in spite of a strong gale against him along the hack stretch ho set such a merry pace that the time registered, 2rain 33 -i-ssec, was 1 2-3 sec inside the New Zealand and Australian race record held by .Minton Derby. Prince Pointer did his best work over the concluding stages, and was overhauling; Peter Bingen as the post was reached. Jewel Pointer weakened in the run home, while Great Bingen, although essaying a promising run three furlongs from home, did not threaten danger when headed for the post. Peter Bingen was driven a well-judged race by J. J. Keunerley, who has established a unique record in connection with free tor alls, this being his seventh success, five being gained at Addington and one at Auck'aud and Otahulm rcspectivclv. * * ♦ The Snckhurn Handicap, for unhopplcd trotters, was productive of a most impressive' performance by Elzear, who did not move off too well and gave tho field a big break. Duko Bingen was the pacemaker until the straight was reached the last time, where Elzear, who had made up her ground' gradually, had the leader’s measure and went on to win in an easy manner by three lengths. Tho favourite, Maxcgin, was eight lengths away. She was rnlining in behind Duko Bingen over tho first circuit, but broke and lost a lot of ground, while Kola Boy, who was in ■ second place four furlongs from home, I also letfc his feet. Peter Swift and j Little Logan wore never within reach , of the leaders. * * :* * Prince, who was involved in the inquiry held after the opening, but which was held over until after the second day’s programme, was made a much better favourite than the bracketed pair Talaro and Logan Chief. He was in a promising position after, five furlongs had been covered, hut I when pressure was applied along the j back ho broke badly and took no further part in the race. Talent was the I early leader, and piloted the field over the first mile, leading into the straight from Golden Devon, Zenith, Logan Chief, and Talaro. Talent appeared to have tho race in hand, but Logan Chief, settling down to a difficult task from well back, got up in time to snatch victory on the post by half a head. Golden Devon was a length away in front of Talaro and Zenith. WHANGARE! MEETING DESERT GLOW WINS GUP [Pub Uniibd Vbess Association.] WHANGAREI, November 3.
