BRICK FIREPLACES
METHOD OF GLEANING In regard to cleaning brick fireplaces, “Cottage” writes as follows: — “I have a brick fireplace built up as high as the mantlepieoo (for an open fire). The bricks showing in the dmiim room are badly stained and arc marked with the black of the ‘ pointing’; so is the mortar. What is the beest way to clean this off? Would it bo advisable to oil the fireplace after cleaning; if so, with what kind of oil?” . , , To remove black mortar stains, brush on sufficient water to which has been added a quantity of hydrochloric acid (spirits of salts) until all traces of anything adhering to the brick have been removed. Wash again thoroughly, and when perfectly dry give a a coat of pure raw linseed oil. Care should bo taken to see that all traces of t.ic acid are removed, otherwise destruction or the mortar joints will immediately follow.
