October Kb An nimmal assauk case was heard before justices of the peace to-day. it took the form of a private action m which William Hermansen, a farmer ot Maharahara, was charged with having assaulted Thomas Hanson. The complainant said that when he told the defendant ho was leaving his employ the accused threw his gear out of the harness room. The accused also picked up a heavy gate hinge weighing several pounds and struck witness across the right arm and then the lelt arm. Witness put his hands to ins face to protect himselt. Had ho not done so ho would have hern struck on Hie head. Ho had to go to the hospital for treatment. The aecnsod admitted there had been a scuffle, but said that Hanson struck him first, and had picked up the gate hinge. In getting the hinge away from the complainant Hanson must have been struck. Witness could not account for Hie manner in which Hanson received his injuries. The Dench took a, serious view of the matter, .and convicted and sentenced Hermansen to twenty-one days’ imprisonment. The Dench further declined to consider the question of a fine., the suspension ot the warrant, or tins granting of a retrial.
