OPENING DAY MILD WEATHER CONDITIONS Although heavy rain was experienced in the city last night, no ram fell at Wingatui. The light fall there yesterday made a great improvement to the track, which was in excellent order today for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. The cold southerly wind of the early morning moderated before the first race, and mild conditions were experienced. The attendance was good. When the tapes were subsequently raised Pound Note shot out from Wine Tray, Royal Flower, Proud Knight, and Waving Corn. Pound Note and Wine Tray were tlio leaders when the field settled down, with Waving Corn and Proud Knight at the head of a strung-out field. At the far turn Pound Note was showing the way to Waving Corn, Wine Tray, and Proud Knight, with Starshooter making a _ forward move. On the bend Pound Note opened out a two lengths’ lend from "Waving Corn, with Wine Tray next and Starshooter handy. Pound Note led into the straight from Waving Corn, who caught the leader at the distance post. Pound Note quickly shook oil the challenge, and went on to win by two lengths from Starshooter, who got up in time to beat Waving Corn by a head. Wine Tray, Royal Flower, and Proud Knight were next.
