GOLF
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCE TO-MORROW FORM OF PLAYERS. The New Zealand golf championships commence to-morrow on the Otago Loll Club’s Links at Bnlmaeewun, and as this is the first occasion on which they have been held in Dunedin since ibid great interest is being nianilcstcd in them.
Tho Utago Loll Club has gono to considerable trouble and expense m yetting the course m good order, and extensive alterations, especially in the bunkering, have been cheated. While the links are in good order the dry weather lias made the ground very iuird, and the competitors will no doubt find the greens, which are very lust, somewhat troublesome. A good shower of lain to-night would be much welcomed, as it would have the effect of slowing, them up.
When the championships were held hero in 1913, E. S. .Douglas (professional) won the open championship and B. H Wood the amateur championship, healing J)r K. Ross, tvlio had net thou been lung out irom Scotland, in tlio final. Wood has since retired from competitive golf, but both Douglas and Dr Boss will bo playing to-morrow. The qualifying rounds of the amateur and professional championships are held concurrently with the open championship, the first ihirfy-two amateurs and the first eigt professionals respectively qualifying. He has been showing excellent form in his practice games, and will ho very hard to heat in the open championship. Other professionals who have been doing very good rounds this week are Shaw (192(3 champion), MMntosh (winner of the piofessionai tournament hold here during the Exhibition), Blair, and Butters. There is a very strong entry of amateurs, the most notable absentees being A. D. 8 Duncan (ton times amateur champion and three times open champion) and L. Quin (amateur champion in 1924). Players who are expected to do well and are playing good golf at present aro S. Morpeth {the present amateur champion), T H Horton (1925 amateur champion), K. M. Macfivrlane (1925 open champion), A.
