SELF-DENIAL APPEAL.

TO THE CWORSir,—Tho Salvation Army; is tlio friend of every man. but st is at war with man’s vices. Men of all naticas are pleased to applaud the Army’s welfare work—its care for the naglfected and friendless—for they recognise in it a valuable agency oi social regeneration. The Army’s work in the social realm is unquestionably a great gam. The Array is a powerful and expanding missionary force, it ms more than three thousand missionary officers working in eighty-two countries and Colonies. It is possible here to do little more than set forth in general terms what ;s the Salvation Army, which General Hramwell BootiTTms aptly described as “ the Army of the helping hand.” Its officers, by systematic visitation, aro in constant touch with the people in their homes, counselling and guiding them and lifting their thoughts up to God and righteousness. In its thirty homes and institutions in New Zealand'tho Salvation Army is caring at the present time for over 1,000 men, women, and children, in addition to which free meals and beds are being given in hundreds every day (103,682 meals. 71,97$ beds, having been supplied during the past twelve months). In a word, the Amv is addressing itself to human need literally from the cradle to the grave, and its officers are proud to regard themselves as “servants of all ” for Christ’s sake. To-morrow tho local members of the Salvation Army aro holding their annual street day in connection with tho self-denial appeal for 1923, and would solicit the help of the public of the city in making this important appeal a successful one in order that “ the Army of the helping hand ” may continue its good .work. —I am, etc., October 10.
