(Received October 1, at 10 a.m.) Serious clashes occurred between Hindus and Mohammedans, resultingin a largo number of casualties, at the celebration of the Ganpati Hindu festival in the centres in the Bombay province. At Surat and Nasik several police officers, including Europeans, wore inred in attempting to separate tho fanatical religious opponents. At Nasik the Hindus attacked a mosque while the Moslems were at prayer. A mob of 10,00(1 assembled, and a threatening situation developed, hut tho crowd was persuaded to disperse. At Surat the police wero forced to open fire and disperse the rioters, who stoned a Hindu procession. There were many casualties, and a tense situation prevails. There was rioting also at Poona, where Moslems refused to obey the police order to disperse, and a fracas between Sikhs and Moslems at Hyderabad, in Deccan, to which place armed troops have been sent.—Australian Press Association.
