Also competed: Miss Netta Fuller 84, Miss Cara Peterson 84, Miss Jessie M'Donald 82. Miss Thorn thought very highly of the work displayed in this section, Miss Budge’s high cutting and deportment being particularly good. The dignity which this dancer instilled into her work was not often seen. Miss Mackio showed good footwork, but her arm action was rather overdone, and this fact was inclined to detract from the dignity of her performance. The footwork of Miss Millar and Miss 0 Sullivan was very neat, but thoy did not show it off to the same advantage as the two previous competitors. BALLET DANCE, toe, 16 years and over. Miss Myra Webster, 87 points ... T Miss Etta Lang, 82 points 2 Miss Vivienne Lamb, 80 points ... 3 These were the only competitors. Mr Knowsley stated that when students of dancing were sixteen or seventeen years of age they were entering the most interesting period in their studies, and he was sorry that there were not more competitors. Miss Webster gave a very finished performance, and showed signs of good technique in general, particularly Soft ports de bras and freedom of movement. Miss Lang had a very effective style and a very free movement, but was inclined to let the knees bend while on point, which was a serious fault. _ The leg must bo kept straight from hip to knee. Miss Lamb had a dainty, refreshing style, and had the makings of a brilliant toe dancer when she overcame, a few technical faults.

IRISH HORNPIPE?- girls under 18 j years. 1 Miss Rita Millar (Oamaru) ... ... 1 . Miss Lorna Budge ... ... 2 Miss Cara Peterson ... ... ... ... 3 Highly commended: Miss Nettn Pullar 80, Miss Doreen O’Sullivan 78. Also competed: Miss Libbio Hayden 75, Miss Doris Mackio 74, Miss Jessie M'Donald 74, Miss Winifred Hooper (Cromwell) 73. Miss Thorn siaid that this class as a whole was rather disappointing, as many of the competitors were capable ■ of doing much more difficult stepping. ■ The steps were not always true to type. Body and arm action should be a minor consideration, as the foundation of the dance was based on complicated rhythmic beating. This being so, the dancer, must have that perfect rhythm which is one of the greatest features. BALLET DANCE, operatic, other than too, under 12 years.
