MACANDREW BAY NOTES

[Fsow Otm COKBESrONUENT.] Tho Card Club tournament, which extended over a period of some months, terminated on Tuesday last, when there was a full attendance of members. Owing to tho fact that several of the club members were even for championship points, a keen competition was expected in this tho final scries ol games, and consequently some spirited and interesting games resulted. In the ladies’ section some six were level, and in this the final effort honours were ultimately won by Mrs Hook with a total of seventy-live games, Mesdamcs Kedlett, Shurrock, Rowlands, and Eergr.sson being equal with seventy-two games, in the gents’ section Mr Ec-rgussou (president) won somewhat easily with a total of cighty-two games, Mr Hinklcy being second with seventyfive games. A further aggregate prize of a tea tray presented by Mr Eergusson for tho most consistent player throughout the season was won by Mrs Shurrock. Tho booby prizes were won by Mrs Milward and Mr Erector. Great interest is being shown in the Girl Guido movement. Some time ago tho officers of tho local Guides and Brownies sat for their examination, and it is gratifying to leunp that all gained excellent passes. The first gathering of Guides was held ou Wednesday last, when a considerable number enrolled as members. Next week the Brownies bowl their first meeting, and an enthusiastis muster is anticipated Tho Ladies’ Committee continues to shoulder its responsibilities toward the movement, and with tho co-operation of officers, Guides, and Brownlee, the movement should become an unqualified success. In securing tho services of Mr Cooper as conductor in place of Mr Desmoulins, who has removed from tho district, the committee feels that it lias been very Fortunate. Tho energy ho has displayed in connection with the activities of tho Glee Club has brought about a considerable improvement in all sections, aul judging from tho recent rehearsals, it is quite evident that a real ’.rcat is in store for the residents of the Ray in this the first of a series of concerts to be held at an early date. Tho Bazaar Committee mot in the school on Wednesday last, Air Jk-wloy (chairman) presiding over a fair attendance. Ho reierred to the k.ss Hie district had sustained in the death ol Reynolds, a very old and respecicd resident of tho P.omnsula. It was tosolved that a letter of condolence bo sent to the deceased’s realtives, those ptesent standing in silence as a nurjj ol respect. It was resolved Hint tie Ladies’ Committee meet every Wednesday afternoon for sowing purposes, also that a card tournament be bold cveiy Tuesday, commencing next Tuesday week. It was decided that the tug-of-war teams consist of a captain and six men, average weight of same not to exceed eleven stone. It has been brought -under the writer’s notice quite recently that what might have been a series of accidents have been narrowly averted on that section of the main Portobello road known as “Sunshine avenue point,” and as this particular pom* ls a menace to motorists and pedestrians alike in so far as that their view is totally obscured coming I nun either direction, it is a matter that might well be taken up by either the Peninsula Motor Service or the Otago Motor Cluo as a matter of public safety. Some compromise might then be arranged with tho City Council, which body, it is understood, controls this section oi the road, and the County Council with a view to having this dangerous corner removed.
