TRADERS ASK WITHDRAWAL [PjCB Un'ITED I’EESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, August 23. A deputation representing the traders of the dominion wailed on Mr Coates to-day in regard to the C.O.D. system, asking that it be withdrawn. Air Campbell, M.P. (Hawke’s Bay), supporting the speakers, said the system was originally adopted in the interests of Empire trade and unity, but it was found that it was acting con : trary to the interests of traders in this country. Mr Coates, replying, said the only real point at issue was whether the Government should act as agent for firms which were operating on the C.O.D. system. The figures he had boon able* to obtain went to show that the system Avas coming more generally into use. He would be glad to bring the matter before Cabinet, and would take the earliest opportunity of nc quainting the deputation of the Government’s views. The Premier also said he avouM brine the cash order system, as operating in Australia, before the Department ei Industries and Commerce.
