GLASGOW’S PAGEANT
HISTORY RE-ENACTED BY 5,000 PERFORMERS LONDON, June 21. The historical Pageant ol Glasgow and the West of Scotland was opened yesterday afternoon in beautilul weather ‘ in the grounds of Garscubo House. Glasgow, the opening ceremony being performed liy the Duke ol Athol 1. The site, which is on Uto banks ol the river Kelvin, is admirably -suited for a display of the hind which has been organised on an elaborate scale. There arc over 5,00 l) performers. It opens with the legends ol Languored b nilh the introduction of St. Mungo and ibo discovery of the ring of the (.)uoen. Then the scene changes to the Viking invasion, with the Norse galleys appearing in the Kelvin and the overthrow of Somerled bv the knights of St. John, with the death of the Lord or the Isles and his son. The story of Glasgow’s trade ion us the succeeding episode, and finally there is the picturesque entry of Prince Charlie to Glasgow with his Highlanders at his bade. Perhaps the most picturesque episode is the story of Glasgow’s trade. In the first scene Glasgow Fair seems to teem with life, with its gaily-coloured booths its traders, its mountebanks and dancers, and with vivid splashes of colour in the dresses of the womeu a-s they mingle in gorgeous groups. _ In the second scene, James VI. arrives with his court, and is treated to line sinking. Hero' again the colour was magnificent, but the costumes were more rich anr rare, and lent great dignity to the wearers.
