(Received August 22, at 11.30 a.m.) An amazing story of a ship’s fierce battle with tho elements, when fourteen lives were lost, is related in tho log of the tramp steamer W. S. M‘Kinney, which arrived last night, long overdue from Seattle.

Heavy seas shifted the forward lumber deck load, and tho mast crashed over tho starboard side. The next moment the whole deck load went overboard. All hands were called on deck to cover the hatches which had been washed away. A big wave washed over tho ship, swamping her from stem to stern. Tho windows of tho upper chart room were broken, the wheelhouse was flooded, fiand fourteen hands wore carried overnoard- No attempt at rescue was possible. The ship cruised in the vicinity the next day, while tho weather moderated. The floating lumber was carefully searched, bub none of tho missing men were found.—United Service.
