Laid Against William John Hardy
Accused of Kyeburn Diggings Shooting
Remand for Eight Days
Charged with tha murder of Jo Shen at tha Kyeburn Diggings on Tuesday, William John Hardy was arrested by tho detectives at Dunedin this morning.
This man alighted from the express from Otago Central at Caversham on Wednesday evening, leaving his swag in the carriage. He was located yesterday morning and taken to the police station. Later in tho day he was detained as a suspect.
On word being received of Hardy’s detention in Dunedin Sue Pee, the dead Chinese’s employee, was immediately, motored from Kyeburn Diggings for the purpose of attending the identification parade.
Following the parade this morning, Hardy was formally arrested, and shortly afterwards was charged in the Police Court witithe murder, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.
A temporary suspension of the court business was made to allow the charge to be brought, and on the name of William John Hardy being called a man of about twenty-five years of age stepped into the box. Hardy is tall, being slightly over 6ft In height, and of gaunt features, with a crop of golden wavy hair.
Detective Lean asked for a remand for eight days
" Tha remand is granted,” stated the Magistrate, and the accused was taken back to the police station.
