HOSPITAL BOARDS ANO UNEMPLOYMENT

AUCKLAND, July 12. “ If wo go on relieving unemployment at the present rate, which is a charge upon the charitable aid side of the Hospital Board, wo will probably exceed onr estimates by £5,000,” said Mr W. Wallace, chairman of the New Zealand Hospitals Association, who returned today after interviewing Mr Coates and Mr Stewart on the question of unemployment. Mr Coates (he said) had referred himself and the other representatives to Mr Stewart when it came to a question of asking the Government to provide further monetary assistance. “The Government was told in very clear terms,” said Mr Wallace, “ that the greater proportion of the unemployment is due to national causes, and in view of the tendency of the unemployed to drift to the larger centres it was urged that relief of distress should he borne out of the Consolidated Fund.
