FRUIT AND PRODUCE

Bray Bros., Ltd., report as follows for week ended to-day:— Tho chaff market remains very quiet. A few consignments are arriving, hut sales are difficult to effect, and £5 10s for best lines is tho top market price. There is very little shipping business from this port, most of the North Island merchants buying through Blenheim, where the market has been firmer than the south. It is reported that stocks are getting short in Marlborough district, which may he the means of firming the Canterbury and local markets. , There is very little interest being displayed in the oat market. Holders are still pressing to sell, but there is little response from purchasers. Only small lots are being shipped to the north; Stocks in stores are fairly plentiful. Sales of A Gartens have been made during the week at 4s 1d,f,0.b., s.i. The price for B’s still shows a substantial margin as compared with A grade oats. The milling wheat market continues quiet, so far as the Otago district is concerned. Millers are carrying fair stocks, and they are not anxious to buy more in the meantime. Tuscan is worth round .about 5s 7d per bushel, sacks extra, on trucks, and Hunters 6s. The fowl wheat market is unaltered. There is very little demand at present, hmall parcels have changed hands at 5s 9d, sacks extra, on trucks. Millers’ prices are as follows: Flour: 200’s, £.17 10s; 100’s, £lB 10s; 50’s, £lB 15s; 25’s, £l9 ss. Bran, £7. Pollard, £S 10s Oatmeal: 200’s, £22; 25’s, £23. Pollard has been reduced £1 per ton, and oatmeal has been advanced £2 per ton. Tho potato market has firmed a little during the week. There has been a further inquiry from the North Island. High prices have ruled for f.0.b., Lyttelton. Best lines to-day are worth up to £6 10s on the local market, and growers are holding for an advance in prices, but this will all depend upon tho demand from the north. The onion market has also advanced. Canterbury grown are now in very small compass, and the price ruling today on the local market is round about 12s fid. Everything points to prices advancing. Business in the fruit marts has been steady during the week. A feature of the market is the drop in the price of oranges. Shipments ha come forward from Australia, and also consignments from the islands. Island oranges have been selling at 15s case for good quality. This is the lowest price they have been quoted on the local market for some considerable time. Australian navel oranges are offering from 16s to 20s. These are also low in price in comparison with prices that have been ruling for some time. It is reported that the crops in Australia are extra good, and if this market secured direct consignments from Samoa as promised prices for oranges and bananas should be within reason. Apples are in good supply, and prices low. Fair consignments of Australian grapes have come on the market, and best quality have sold at satisfactory prices, but inferior quality show a loss to consignors. Lemons are now in good supply. Vegetables have been offering freely, and prices low. The egg market is easy. Larger consignments are coming forward, and tho market is likely to ease. Hams and bacon are in good supply.
